Am I right in thinking anyone with a GAP iiD can read the codes (just not change anything) ?

No-one nearby who could do this for the OP ?

you are quite correct Sir, done it a few times myself

On this occasion I think 398 miles is a bit out of my comfort zone Mr. Green

Thanks for the ongoing help, and kind offers of a visit (if I was anywhere near anyone that is !) So. My mechanic chum spoke today to his Land Rover specialist mate, who literally ONLY does Landys. He immediately said that he knew exactly what the suspension symptoms were down to, and that was the compressor exhaust valve failed - I think it was.

Anyway, we took a look at a few YouTube vids and came to the conclusion that with all the issues that the compressor suffers from, and the potential for the studs and screws to shear off as you try to dismantle it, you are far better to just fit a 140 quid 2 year guaranteed brand new clone - assuming it's an Hitachi one that's fitted now. So the next move is to check that before hitting the poor old Paypal account again …!

I've ordered one of the Autel scanners. Looks like a good move if you own one of these D3s. I don't suppose it can talk to all the different ECUs in the car - the suspension control module for instance ?? - but maybe someone on here knows otherwise ?

Thanks again, all

I would be careful in diagnosing the exhaust valve..

I had a suspension issue, and although it was (eventually) fixed by the dealer under warranty, I think the issue was something different..

So I had the same symptoms as you, They immediately diagnosed the exhaust valve and it was replaced (took a week to get the part and fit it)

I got the car back and arrived back at my house with the same issue as before.. back it went..

I mentioned to the dealer that when I had the headlight out I noticed there was a connector which had quite bad corrosion (behind LH Headlight).

Anyway, they had it a further 3 week, I got it back with a new compressor fitted.. happy days.. or so I thought.. the next day exactly the same symptoms..

I checked and the plug was still had corrosion.. I took it back to the dealer saying it had the same issues..

I got it back a day later and has been fine ever since.. When I got it back I checked behind the headlight and alas.. no corrosion..

I didn't complain as I got a new exhaust valve and compressor for what I think was just a wiring issue.. I believe (but cant fully remember) that something on the suspension runs through that connector so in my opinion that was likely the issue..

I'm happy to stand corrected, but I remember reading about said connector and suspension issues at the time..

Of course this could be completely irrelevant as D3 may be different to mine..

Here is a post about the connector and one of my posts about it..

Forgot to mention, the dealer didn't mention the wiring repair in the invoice.. just the compressor and exhaust valve.. but the wiring certainly fixed the issue..

I am in Earls Barton. Thanks for the interest. I have an Autel scanner on the way so that may help. If we are still in trouble reading codes, may I PM you to see if we can fix something up ?

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. The car had the "Normal ride height only" issue before all the fuel pump issues. The latest thing of the suspension module going to full fault mode only happened this last weekend after having the suspension cranked up and down for getting underneath (fuel filter replacement etc) so it seemed reasonable for the issue to be pump related and exhaust valve a likely candidate. We'll take on board potential wiring issues and see if we can check first if the pump supply relay is being driven, and if not, if the pump runs with it removed and bridged. The 'expert' that my mate spoke to said that the exhaust valve failure will cause the suspension control module to lock itself out so that nothing works until the problem is corrected. It does seem to have gone this way, but a bit further research, I think … Neutral

Further update

The Autel code reader turned up, so yesterday, my chum did some more work on the Disco. Some tests on the suspension pump revealed that it did run, but very sluggishly, so it's now off. It's an original Landy part, but has a silver-painted number on the end, so probably been replaced before with a dismantler part ... Anyways, new 'Chinese' replacement on the way. Although the fuel pressure at the Schraeder valve is not what it should be, the engine continues to start and run ok, so new fuel pump for another day.

So, the code reader. Is it any good. Well, yes, it does seem to be. It was easy to set up and the interactions between my phone and Autel's website for registration etc and the device and the car were smooth and seamless. I did an autoscan of the car for VIN identification, and it found it and correctly identified the car, pointing me to the correct software to download as my 'free one'.

That took a while as it was quite big - around 18 meg I think it was - but it went ok. When I opened it, it told me that I needed to download another piece of software in order to use that package so I went ahead and did that. That gives a second 'diagnostic' app to run. When I started that, the scanner connected to the main ECU and read all of the fault codes (there were a lot with the suspension pump off and the EPB disabled ! Very Happy ) and gave full explanations of what was going on. We also tried a sample code erase on one of the remote modules, and that happened without a problem. It seemed to read just about every module on the car - right down to the individual volume controls etc on the audio system. So, so far, I'd have to say highly recommended for 43 quid including Landy software - and that appears to be for the whole suite of vehicles from 2 to 4
