United Kingdom

DG, some of us always remember that we are just animals and have no problem with that. There are some that find the thought distasteful for reasons that escape me.

It's fascinating, to me at least, to think that here we are: a not-particularly strong animal, with fairly insignificant dentition (compare to a Chimps, for example, and its large canines), no claws etc. We do have a developed brain, of course. One thing humans are very good at is dealing with high temperatures. It has been said that a human can run in temperatures that will floor a dog or a horse. We used that ability (and it has been documented in "primitive" tribes in Africa) to run down prey. Hunters, who can't physically fight a large gazelle, will run the animal to exhaustion. It seems to be something that humans evolved to do. The upright stance reduces thermal gain in the heat of the day, hair on the head protects the brain from the sun's heat, relatively sparse hair elsewhere allows for efficient cooling. It's only one hypothesis but it seems to have some merit.

The really impressive thing, however, is where the brain has taken us. That bundle of cells has lifted us off the planet and yet is physically weak/liable to injury. Quite impressive.

Anyway, enough of my rambles... Embarassed
