A few days ago had a park brake fault appear - lost the gear indication / revsersing lights / parking sensor on 2005 Discovery 3 (manual)
Upon investigation by dealer the x y switch on the manual gear box had failed.
The parts about £100 + but then 5 hours labour - not cheap!
However did drive like a pig until fixed!

Are they sure the sensor was faulty and hadn't just lost its calibration?
There is a DIY method of recalibrating the gear position sensor on the manual gearbox.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I had this problem a few months ago and as the other half had already driven the car to work, LRA refused to come out to look at it. Dealer agreed to look at it that evening before he closed but when she called to say she was on her way, he said all the techs have gone home so no can do. Thankfully, you guys on here provided the solution and she managed to calibrate it herself.
Same problem again this week. Dealer cannot find a slot until start of March for my car. No courtesy cars available until then also. My concern is driving the car without functioning reverse lights which as far as I know is illegal. Not to mention a bit dangerous should someone be close behind and not aware of your intentions of moving towards them! Maybe this should go in the rants section....
Actually, I have 2 questions.
If I call LRA, are they obliged to come and examine/fix the car as it cannot be driven on the road?
Dealer wants me to pay insurance on the courtesy car, is this normal?
Thanks
Richard

Try another dealer ?
Insurance - normal down here although very straightforward for me as I'm covered on any vehicle I drive so there's never any drama.
When my wifes TD5 is ever in for service we transfer our/her insurance for the time required.

The gear position sensor is located on the top of the transmission housing necessitating removal of the transmission to replace it.

LRA have come out twice to my car when the X-Y sensor has thrown a fit. However, the fault I reported to them was the failure of the autorelease on the EPB. This is caused by the car not knowing it is in gear when you pull away.
LRA tech recalibrated the X-Y sensor and told me that if it happened again I should send it to the dealers. It did happen again and it went to the dealers but I got Colliers standard reply "We couldn't make it it do that Sir". Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

I asked the dealer would it matter if I recalibrated it myself and he said there should still be a fault logged that he can find. So for now its booked in. Doesnt sound like much point getting LRA out then if they just refer it to a dealer..

Remove the transmission to replace a sensor - don't you just love designers who consider the need to service things.

TLO, how do they keep from contaminating the gearbox when unable to see the sealing surfaces around the gearbox sensor?
