Additional Insurances Offered

Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on the additional insurances offered by the dealer and/or available independently?

Total Loss Cover - ensures that you get full value of vehicle in a write off 3ry/25k (£499)

Complete Wheel Protection - damage to tyres, punctures and damage to alloys covered 3yrs (£399)

Minor Damage Protection - chips, scratches and minor damage covered without claiming on main insurance or having to pay an excess (£399)

The other one not really an insurance but a 'protection'?
GuardX Paint and interior protections - think the interior is like Scotchguard and the exterior some additional coating protection (RainX type? not sure) (£415)

Just wondered if anyone had them, had experience with their effectiveness and ease of claims?

+1. Plus if it's a LR dealer flogging them you'll be able to get them elsewhere at way cheaper. Nice money spinner for them.

Don't understand why you would buy any of them. Insurers only offer products that make them money so you would need to be more unlucky/a worse driver than the average for the policies to make sense.

FWIW most car insurance policies replace the car with a new one in the first year or with some it is two years.

Personally I go for the total loss cover on any cars I've bought in the past 3 years.

Depreciation is just too much and I've had 2 friends suffer badly from this recently.
One bought a Ford Fiesta for his son, paid £12k for it, got written off within the first 5 months and was only offered £8.5k from the insurance.

Second was a colleague who bought a Merc E Class and it got written off within 8 weeks, he lost nearly 7 grand on it.

...but if he lost £7k on a Merc then the offer has to reflect what you can go and buy a used one for so he should have been able to go on the Merc used car site and find the same (ish).

Is it strange that my insurance policies offer new replacement?

All insurances I have had over the last 10yrs or so have included total loss cover within the first 12mths at least, I think you need to choose your insurance company carefully rather than pay out a huge premium to a dealer to cover it. Those that don't have it included in their insurance policies and have a total loss claim only have themselves to blame for not reading the document or ensuring it was covered, there will always be someone looking for the cheapest who will then cry when it all goes wrong.

None of it is rocket science, it is very simple, if you have the money to throw away then do it, it will not make your car any more valuable at all, but like the extended warranties on small electrical items sold in Currys and the like it is a massive money spinner and money for old rope hence the car salesmen getting in on the action.

When we put GAP insurance on the wife's Hyundai it was 75% cheaper to go through a broker than the dealer

Does the wheel protection covert you off-road ?

I reckon if it does that's not such a bad deal as it would cover itself with 2 tyres in 3 years.

It's the only one I'd consider.

If it's a simple nail in the tread that can easily be repaired, otherwise you might end up getting a worn out tyre replaced with a nice shiny new one…..

I have taken this out before as believe it could be worthwhile. The price is very negotiable though, say you have some far better options and see the cost tumble

I have taken out GAP insurance on my current D4 (purchased used) and my previous car, but I found my own cover for substantially less than what either dealer quoted.

As for the other bits like wheel cover I felt it didn't seem worth it so will take my chances.

Interesting cross section of views, thank you all for your thoughts.

Like any insurance it is a gamble, do you pay the premium and never claim it might seem a waste, do you not pay the premium and then end up spending x? the premium to get it back to how it was.

Gamblers game I think, shop around and make your choices it would seem.

Thank you all.

I think dealers' business models have changed a lot. The car can be the vehicle (pardon the pun) to selling higher margin products. Sales people often penalised / incentivised for not selling / selling of add-ons.

I think it call came about when the dealers invented the F&I Manager...
