Advice on a realistic sales price - Non Runner D3

Hi All,

Unfortunately my D3 engine failed recently and as much as i'd hoped to replace the engine myself and got as far as sourcing all the parts, work/family commitments is preventing me from finishing it anytime soon and rather than it sit idle for god knows how long i have decided to let it go and looking to sell with the spares package and i'm looking for a bit of advice on a realistic for sale price. The prices in the for sale ad template are what i was thinking but may be miles off.

The D3 was owned by a previous member Doggydog before i bought it and was meticulously cared for and i have a folder full of recipes from his purchase and have continued to keep this up to date through my ownership.

Original sales post link here https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/sale-discov...74071.html

My proposed for sale ad giving more details on the car and spares available

2006 (56) Discovery 3 HSE - Engine Seized (suspected broken crank/oil pump failure) - with new engine and loads of other spares (approx 180k would need to check)

I am looking to sell my Discovery 3 as a fixer upper. The car itself minus the engine issue is in great condition for its age and has been well looked after from new & has had all the big jobs done, turbo/air suspension compressor handbrake module rebuild etc. The car has all the bells and whistles including full grey leather seats, heated front and rear seats, roof mounted dvd/tv screen and bluetooth headphones, reversing camera etc. bodywork is in great condition with only a small rust spot on the rear upper tailgate.

Jobs recently carried out prior to engine failure

Full Oil and Filter Change on all Diffs and Transmission
Full brake line and hose replacement
New vacuum Pump and brake master cylinder/servo
Handbrake module overhaul and cable replacement
Front Air Shock Replacement x 2
New discs and pads and handbrake shoes, including V8 front upgrade (bigger discs and carriers) (will need a clean up from sitting)
New High PressureFuel Pump
Transmission Sump Replaced with two part version and full flush and filter change
Underside rust removal and treatment (Chassis Rails & Body) - Great condition for age. Even MOT tester commented on how fresh it was
4 x new Goodyear Wrangler Tyres and Alloys powdercoated including spare wheel.

Bad Points

Engine Knackered
Side Steps are badly corroded and will need replaced
Rubbers around windows are starting to bubble and look crap, easily replaced with a new set from online.
Propshaft Rubber Support bearing is perished and will need repaired/replaced.
Small leak from passenger side front diff seal where driveshaft connects - have a new seal that i’ll include

I purchased and stripped a crash damaged Range Rover Sport 2.7 (106k miles) to use as a donor for the rebuild, the car was fully running and drove off the lorry and engine/drivetrain has no issues.

I am offering the car and spares in two packages depending on how much spares you want along with it

Discovery 3 including replacement engine with all ancillaries (injectors/fuel pump etc) - £3000

Discovery 3 including replacement engine all ancillaries gearbox and all diffs/driveshafts etc £4000

Honestly, as lovely as it is and with another engine that needs fitting, I think you are being optimistic bearing in mind how many of these in running order are fetching similar money.

I think you'd be better off ring fencing some time and being strict about it to fit the replacement engine and get it back on the road Thumbs Up

totally get where you're coming from and as i said the prices were just a guesstimate. It may come to the point where i will end up fixing it but at the moment i'd like to test the water for potential buyers hence asking. my pricing was based on the car being worth approx 2k as is, a bare engine without ancillaries is about 1k so one with all ancillaries would be slightly more. Then with all diffs and box etc being about a few hundred each would take it to around the 4k mark. the full spares package may only be suitable to someone who deals in discovery's and would be able to make use of the parts so may end up selling these separately.

I get the logic. It's a tough one letting a good car go when you can fix it. Sadly time is the enemy of us all.

I agree with Moo the 'best' option is to finish the job but if no time then I think you're really at the mercy of eBay type auction if you really want it gone with maybe a £2k start price given decent (?) MOT'd runners can be had for not that much more.

I think part of the problem (for me) is as soon as I saw the words 'blown engine' I'd move on so you're likely trying to sell to a limited market anyway of someone able to see the real car beyond the knackered engine.....

Good luck anyways Thumbs Up

Don't think i could do that to it as feel its too good to strip, the other issue is i live up in the north east of scotland so shipping parts, particularly heavy ones cost an arm and a leg and most people are not willing to pay that to get the parts

You’re best off just seeing it through and getting it running. If it helps gives any kind of perspective at all the last 3 discos I’ve bought were sub £600 and were all HSE spec good runners just had other smaller issues. One I’ve just sold was a 56 plate HSE with 170k for £2k all fixed up with absolutely no faults and 11 months MOT.

Stripping to me is a waste of time as well, been there done that and was hard work to shift anything due to endless messers wanting the world for nothing. The value also is in the (running) engine, everything else sells for Censored all. I gave up selling any parts out of frustration and they have served me far better being used on my own Discos that have come through the workshop.

It’s actually very therapeutic to strip the car, and most of the bits should sell. I stripped mine in near freezing conditions 2000 miles from home when the engine packed in on a N Norway jolly. I wasn’t able to bring back heavy stuff (flew back and took my D4 up to retrieve all my gear and stripped parts) but there’s a lot of value in the light stuff. OK, the engine you have and the gearbox won’t fit in the post but lots of stuff will fit in boxes and Jiffy bags. I used Hermes ISTR, they were reasonably cheap at the time (summer 2017). Plus plenty of peeps in the NE in need of parts. Take your time, be organised and you’ll get way more back than she’s realistically worth in one piece. Thumbs Up
