Battery Drain

The very latest update! At the moment, the fickle finger of fate is pointing at a faulty TCCM ECU, even though it seems to work just fine. The theory is that it is not shutting down properly.

I have purchased, from the GAP people, the ability to flash the replacement ECU with the latest firmware etc. this cost a very reasonable £25. I have also paid £95, plus postage for a used ECU from a wreckers in Devon (as one does). It is an awful lot cheaper than buying a new one in Australia, especially as LR has a no return policy and tne warranty is voided if you do not have it replaced at a LR dealer!

In the meantime, whilst waiting for Captain Drake to deliver the replacement ECU (hopefully he is not distracted by a Spanish Galleon or by the complete Armada) , I tried flashing the existing ECU as suggested by the GAP people, but it does not look it has fixed the drain. I am in te process of checking again. I have to say that V29 of the IITool manual is a major step forward from V19 that I had originally. Also the flash and calibration of the clutch and sensor, were so easy, that even I managed to get to the end ok, well eventually, as reading instructions is not one of my string points!

Have you tried the key issue?
Mine was not shutting down completely because of it and drained the battery.
But my alarm went off when it got low for some reason.

Yes I did and it did not seem to be the issue. If anything, flashing the existing ECU seems to have increased the draw!!!

Battery Drain

And so it goes on. The Forsyth Saga has got nothing on the great battery drain saga.

The replacement Transfer Case ECU made no difference and the original ECU looked to be in pristine condition and a lot cleaner than the replacement delivered personally by Captn Drake. I know that shipwreckers used to operate in Cornwall but they seem to have been replaced by car wreckers from Devon.

Armed with the new mini digital clamp (UT211B) a fresh attempt at tracking down the drain was made. The clamp seems very sensitive and the measured current on the cable from the cranking battery to the fuses under the bonnet was not completely stable but was around 80ma. A current between the cranking battery and the Traxide USI160 was also measured at 178 ma and from the USI to the (disconnected) auxiliary battery was measured at 73ma, but ignored for the purposes of the exercise.

Initially, as before, F27, FL17 and FL18 registered currents, but on remeasurement, FL17&18 seemed to be quiescent, leaving just F27, so I am now shooting for F27, which relates to the CANBUS. Reading various posts about the CANBUS it seems that a faulty Transfer case ECU can cause problems with the CANBUS, but that has already been ruled out.

I suspect that the next step is to find a D3 specialist in Canberra or, failing that, in Sydney, dealers aside, as my knowledge is too limited.

Battery Drain

I think that I have made some progress but would appreciate some further advice.

Some time back I had a spare wheel carrier fitted and the technician who fitted said that he had disconnected the rear PDC, as the carrier causes them to activate. However they still made a sound when reversing and I thought nothing of it, but now realise that it is probably seems the error code.

I do not know how the PDC was disconnected and I have yet to pull off the trim to have a look, but wondered whether this error would stop the PDC control unit closing down and giving raise to the battery drain?

Unfortunately the technician is away at the moment and the place is not a LR specialist, but I will call round once they open.

Hi

Had same issue last year, a friend had bought my D3 4 years ago, I got a D4. He chased the battery drain for a few months, multiple Canberra electricians. Dealer eventually isolated it as a faulty hazard light dash switch, issue fixed. Easy one to change yourself or test by disconnecting the switch.

Hope you find the cause soon.

Hi Ianv, msny thanks for your advice. I will try disconnecting the switch tonight, although it just so happens that I am taking the car on Monday for further investigation, to the into the place in Goulburn that has been doing all the servicing.

Do you recall which of the fuses had acurrent running through them please?

The drain is not quite so bad since I isolated the auxiliary battery such that it is not drawing a current though the "smart switch".

There are a lot of circuits going through the hazard unit. It may throw up faults.

My switch failed and caused all sorts of faults to show.

Hi CaverD3, thanks for that information. I pulled the control unit out of the dash last night and unplugged it and the drain was worse. I assume that is the best way to disconnect it, other than tracking down the fuse. If there is a fault it is not stopping the lights from working.

rsp - are you using Robbie's guide to track down the mystery drain?

It's on this page - in case you haven't seen it:

Hi jonesy63, thanks for your post - the answer is yes, although it has been hard to convince the various places that I have taken the car to, that the results of my investigations are correct. Eventually they agree but have been unable to find the cause. Next stop is the closest dealer.

Battery Drain

Finally the main culprit of the draw has been identified. Remeasuring the current drain at the -ve terminal by disconnecting the cable and attaching a multimeter using crocodile clips, the meter clamp having proven too touchy, I got a reading of .16amp after closing down the car. This number breaks down as follows:-

Approx 20ma typical residual current draw
Approx 40ma Aux battery switch (Traxide) in isolate mode
Approx 100ma draw from a Haltek performance chip connected to the engine ECU that was fitted around 2 years ago. This is on F27, although pulling that fuse makes no difference to the current draw that I could see.

It was only some after fitting the Traxide auxiliary battery system that the draw problem started to manifest itself as it creates a draw and the two together was an issue.

The chip had been discounted by myself when it was noticed at the time of swapping the TCCM ECU, as being a possible source of the draw and it looked a challenge to remove..Ultimately all it took was a phone call to the place that had fitted it to confirm that it did create a permanent draw. It would have been a good idea to have done that at the time.

Robbie's guide for identifying parasitic battery draw says to disconnect all after market bits of equipment first, but that means you have to recall long forgotten things.

Of course knowing the reason for the draw does not fix it so it looks like the regular charging needs to continue as the car is not used everyday and most journeys are very short.
