no.......not the one used for puffing on illegal stuff !
I'm getting a bong/chime from the D3 every time I start it - is this right ? (on my D2 a double chime was apparently the ABS self-test).
I get the chime before I actually crank - so turn the key to position 2, the system check thing happens, then I get a chime...........no error message or anything else untowards.
Should I be booking an appointment at the stealers - or is it normal ?

Perfectly normal, don't turn the engine over until you get the bong as it is signalling that the self check is complete, if you turn the engine over before you run the risk of faults, mainly suspension height chnage, special programs and HDC not being available  I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

OMG - that was a quick reply, I'd only just pressed the submit button !!
Still, much appreciated - one less thing to moan at the dealer about (no moans about the vehicle - just the quality aftersales service I'm NOT getting !!)

 Another reply in the time I took me to type my thankyou reply - what a fantastic bunch of peeps you all are.
I read about not starting the engine until the system check had finished (dealer doesnt tell you that), didn't realise that the bong was announcing that the check had finished.
I reckon that the D3 is probably the best car I've ever owned - certainly it's the one that's cost me the most, but definitely the most comfortable to drive, and has the best sound system by far - apart from my home hifi !

You can't have a good vehicle AND good aftersales. If you have a good vehicle you are on a winner, we get great aftersales, but only because we keep having to go back to get stuff looked at!
Don't forget also to wait for the glow plug light to go out before you crank the engine, this may be after the bong by a small or large amount (depending how cold it is...)

Another thing, does this second 'bong' occur as the oil pressure light goes out?
My previous D3 did this, but only when parked facing uphill, and when the oil was a little low. Top up the oil and it might go away

My 2006 MY used to bong once when it had finished its 'boot up' sequence and I also had the oil pressure thing as per Gareth, occasionally - however my new one (2009) doesn't 'bong' at all - should I be worried or have they , at last, got rid of the annoying (and meaningless) bonging before you 'fire up the Disco'??

Dropped the "bong" in question from MY07 IIRC certainly didn't have it on my first one and not on this one MY09 either . . . "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Thanks 90 -did think that was the case - I'll sleep better tonight  ...now if we could just get rid of all those other annoying bongs........you know, the ones for people who forget to put their seatbelt on, never look at the oil level, check to see if the doors are shut, they have left the lights on, haven't realised it is bl**dy cold outside....etc. You know the ones - the people who usually live in a bigger country than the UK!!! (oops not very PC!)

Hi all. Quick question.
If my D3 bongs once while driving but no warning lights or error messages come up on the dash, should I be worried? Do I need a fault code reader to see what the issues is.
It has happens a couple times at low speed and usually on a rough pot hold track.

The D3 will "Bong" at you when the temperature drops below 5°C and a flashing snowflake symbol will appear next to the temperature (4°C) on the display.
Other than this, I'm not sure what else would cause a bong but no message. Normally, you would see an "i" symbol in the bottom left corner of the display when they car is trying to tell you something. You can scroll to it by pressing the ( i ) button on the end of the indicator stalk.

Yeah well above 5degs C today and already had the i up as was in command shift. I did check to see but nothing came up and then when I put it back in to full auto the i went on the dash. Contemplated the front parking sensors reacting to the water splash but doesn't sound the same bong.
So to confirm if/when I get an error message/fault I will get the bong and a message on the LCD dash screen.
Will it keep bonging until fixed/ cleared.

The only thing I find irritating on my 05 D3 is that all the bl**dy bongs are the same... Door, seat belt, temperature, key left in, front parking, rear parking...
Now resolved by listening to Motörhead very loudly so either can't hear them or so deaf it don't matter!!  Derbyshire born, Derbyshire bred; strong in the arm and thick in the he...oh!!
