Why should I buy a Discovery 4

Hi all
I have a nice Discovery 4 (2014) that I might buy.
However the wife has said do we really such a big car. She is actually right. We only use the car to drive a couple of miles twice a day to walk the dog and the odd drive out to the coast
She will also drive the car so any words of wisdom to help me persuade her would be welcome
Cheers

@alshepuk: only if you don’t want a stress free life. Remember everything that goes wrong with “her” car, and that will be a lot of things, will be your fault. Ask yourself, do you want or need that stress. But on the positive side, you’ll get lots of “you” time fixing it. Thumbs Up

Alshepuk - some are reliable, some aren't - you make your choice and if you're lucky........ Smile

Don't forget, forums like this are mainly populated with posts when things go wrong (and yes things will go wrong and it will hit your credit card hard). But alot of owners will have long periods where nothing goes wrong and drive with a permanent grin on their face. It is a brilliant car, versatile and comfortable and a very commanding view of the road from the driver's seat. And I'm sure your dog will enjoy the space in the back Smile

PS Everyone's definition of "long periods" is different Rolling with laughter

I'm a great D4 fan. But looking at your intended use, there's any amount of cars that'll do that at a much cheaper price and prove more reliable. I'm not that sure you need a 4WD car with all the gadgets at all. Get a nice estate car or one of those new fangled soft roaders, both of which will give you the space for your dog and sip fuel compared to a D4.

Of course if one simply has to have a Discovery, then one simply must get one.

As I tell my wife, normally when she's not within earshot, you get to a stage in life when "sometimes it's not all about what you need more what you want" Just find a good hiding place for receipts is my advice.

As for reliability, just look at some of milage on some, they can't be doing that bad. Thumbs Up

I leased for 5 years and now that one's gone I have bought with my own money. Am loving it and sinking more of my money into it, at the moment on mods but I have no doubt sometime money for maintenance on a bigger scale might be needed.

I have no desire to sell and change marque at the moment.

Good luck with your decision making...

Thumbs Up

First post on here having bought my first D4 secondhand back in March. Having leased a RRS for four years prior, I decided to take the plunge and purchase a fairly low mileage, well cared for 2012 HSE model despite reading all the negative comments re cost of running/repairs from some and haven’t regretted it for one second. It is by car the best car I’ve driven and a far better drive than the 2.0 RRS I had. It’s thirsty, will be undoubtedly costly to repair and maintain properly but if you can afford it, do it and you most definitely won’t regret buying a ‘proper’ vehicle in my opinion.

Alternatively stick your neck right out on one of these - brand new, tad expensie but comes with three years warranty, and won't break! (fingers crossed) and almost does eveything a D4 does! Whistle

Big Cry Big Cry a little bit of sick just came out at the thought....

Ignore all of these...

Go for it... they are an outstanding car, incredibly practical, in the main very reliable, and are great to drive.... my wife initially expressed concerns at the size of the Discovery...however the keys for it were the first plucked from the key cupboard and off she’d go...
Great car! Only replaced mine as I do relatively high mileages...but I’ve still kept a D3 as a spare....
