Car wont start after a long journey

Having completed all the suspension work my disco is now directing me to the engine side.

After a long(ish) journey compared to the shops and back ie 40 plus miles, my disco refuses to start! Oh she turns over ok but just refuses to ignite. Initially i could turn to pos 2, wait 30 secs then start but it seems now i either wait an hour or disconnect then reconnecr the battery.

I'll check what codea if any are present but i have seen several similar threads suggesting the crank position sensor, the fuel temp sensor, the low pressure fuel pump, the high pressure fuel pump, fuel filter wtc etc ...

I'm olen to following a good diagnostic sequence if anyone has any suggestions... failing that i might tune into lr time ... you never know

The fault codes will hopefully show you the correct diagnostic path, without them its just guess work.

There is is fuel at the schrader valve ... so i decided check all the connections and found the fuel temp sensor not fully engaged (could be something to do with 17 years of wear and tear).

Generally she starts and stops with no problems at all with short journeys ... its only the long ones and then a hard reset seems to do the job.

I checked the codes and none were present!!! A conundrum... nothing management related suggests air but a hard reset suggests management.

I'll monitor and post

Ignition key barrel coil for the immobiliser . If there is a open circuit when hot, the engine will turn over but not start. This does not throw a fault code. Seen this also on other vehicles like Audi or VW. This coil also charges your key so it will heat up at long trips.

I'll look into ignition key coil... the fuel temp sensor seems to be a res herring as the old girl decided not to restart after a 20 mins journey in 30 degrees... not even after a hard reset.

I will try and eliminate the high pressure fuel pump ... not sure when the belt and tensioner was last replaced ..definitely more the 100k ago

had a Fiat X1/9 many years ago ... fuel pump diaphragm went porous and allowed hot fuel (petrol) to go back into the tank, meaning a hot start had to prime itself ... which didn't always happen.

granted Disco is diesel, but could similar happen ?

I had the same problem with a Merc 270, took ages to start in hot weather after a pit stop, found to be fuel syphoning back to the tank when stood, I don’t know if this can happen on a Disco as the pump is in the tank.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I have seen faulty fuel filters do this but the fact it will start if you disconnect and reconnect the battery makes me think its electrical
