Why change the oil filter?

what an interesting topic to throw my hat in the ring my Derek (D3) has oil and filter every 6000 miles and to be honest given oil costs nearly £40 and a filter £10 i see it as irellevant. better safe than sorry its the blood that keeps us mobile

I would never swap the oil and not the filter. Mine's had 7 oil/filter swaps in 45k miles so far.

When I worked for Rover, I was told that the fresh detergent in new oil tends to flush out any debris left when draining the old oil , so better to fit a new filter each oil change than having it dumped into an already contaminated filter.

With some of my previous cars, I occasionally used flushing oil to make sure the new oil and filter were starting life in the cleanest possible environment.

Given the D3/4 depends greatly on having the right stuff in it, I've not done it as the flushing stuff is very "thin".

Interesting…. But I will avail you all of my experience of flushing oil …

Did it years ago thinking I was doing the right thing on one of my old cars…my thoughts clean it all out and throw in some brand new super oil and new filter and my car will go 100mph faster…alas once completed had the dreaded oil pressure light come on…
The flushing oil had dislodged all the years of sludge and had totally blocked the gauze filter on the bottom of the oil pump…necessitating a new oil pump…

Hence I have never used flushing oil again…

I knew you was going to ask me that…and to be honest Mikey I can’t remember…I’ve had loads over the years that I have tinkered with…. And in fairness it’s likely to have been 20 years ago probably before the advent of super sexy oils.. the oil pump pick up was in the sump and it had a holey plate on it… the sludge and crud dislodged had been sucked up against the plate…
You’ve set me off trying to work out what engine it was.

I would like to think with regularly servicing and modern oils it’s less likely to happen but I’m still not using it…. Very Happy

Was going to say, it's much less of a problem now with modern synthetic oils

I use flushes in all of my own cars, and family cars for 2 years now, without issue. Anyone who's driving our courtesy car comments on how well it drives, even with 130k miles on it Thumbs Up

Our FL2 has also 130k on it and drives superbly…you would certainly never guess the mileage without the speedo reading.
