Why change the oil filter?

It’s usual to regularly change your oil and filter but is the filter change strictly necessary? If I’m changing my oil every 6,000 miles do I really need to replace the (Mann) filter at the same time? Is it knackered at 6,000 miles? I’m happy to do it if it’s really needed...

If you’re changing oil every 9656,064 kilometers (or once per year, whichever comes first I assume) I think you can splurge on a 20 eur oil filter, too. Mr. Green

You could change the interval from 9656,064 kilometers to whatever JLR suggests in the maintenance schedule or once per year, again whichever comes first. Whistle

it should be changed 6 months or 6000 miles
Its a simple cheap job and it filters THE most important part of an engine

Where does it say that in the maintenance schedule off a D4?- you may change your opinion when you see the price of D4 oil Whistle

To answer the question in the title, no, it is not necessary to change at 6,000 miles.

It is necessary to change it at some point though, because it fills up with muck. As it fills up it becomes less efficient at catching muck. So at some point it needs to be changed or the much starts to do damage to the engine. Different operating conditions also have different rates of muck being produced so have different requirements for change.

Of course, it is not the distance the vehicle has travelled that actually matters, but the total number of revolutions of the engine. So for over 100 years the distance travelled has been used since it is easier to record, and 6,000 miles is a considerable number of engine revolutions, especially if not all are made in top gear. It is an arbitary number that represents a bit less than the median distance of all typical operating conditions.

checked my "service portfolio" booklet and ...

Service Interval Plan 1 applies to .... UK

11 Model Year onwards

Discovery 4 / RRS

service interval is 16000 miles / 26000 km / 12 months
==========================================================

the 6 months interval is from Service Interval Plan 2 ... which applies in many countries, most of which are hotter than UK.

I wouod say new oil = new filter, mainy so you can take a look see at the filter for any unwanted shiny bits!
Mega job if engine blows, and as the cars age it will not be financially viable for many.

If you noticed shiny bits in the filter, what would a realistic course of action be.. presumably sell it quickly is the cheapest one but what else could you do?

We used to have a transit that used oil like an alcoholic. We just used to change the filter as the oil was always being changed.

I agree. I'm doing 12,000 miles a year. If I changed oil and filter at 12,000 miles everybody would be happy. I always change the oil at 6,000 miles. If I dont the filter change till 12,000 miles what difference do it make to the filter. Zero me thinks. Maybe a slightly easy life if anything.

You should change the filter more often than the oil. It collects microscopic debris and reduces the oil flow. Thumbs Up YOU all know the outcome of low oil pressure on these engines. Big Cry
