What is the correct process to recover a D4 onto a truck?

Touch wood I have yet to experience this... ('gulp' saying that) but I read tales of tragedy and woah on here and FB where D3/4s bite the dust for whatever reason and have to be recovered.

What is the correct way to recover a D3/4 that is all 4 wheels on the ground and a flatbed recovery truck with ramps and a winch arrives?

I guess maybe what the cause of the need to recover is relevant but that can't always be determined at the roadside.

Given 4WD and differential(s) I'm interested to know in case a rather more 'cowboy' recovery operator were to arrive and start to do something that was potentially going to do more damage.

On a slightly related note, I did do a 'Search' on this and nothing sprang out (please alert me if there is..) but I did find this excellent pictorial guide about using the D3/4 to recovery tow and the correct useage of the rear recovery point...

Winching on a trailer/flatbed is not a problem, the speed at which a winch will do this cannot do any harm, as long as the dead vehicle is in neutral of course.

I have dragged many cars with locked wheels (but in neutral) onto a trailer without any issues as well, not the best way, but if needs must.....

just need the handbrake released . Disconnect the transmission park release there is a plastic lever( red) in the transmission tunnel accessed by removing the cupholders in front of cubby box and you pull that up and turn the lock 90 degrees Then its safe to move same for towing! Described in page 288 of handbook.

Had this happen to me. I was parked in a bay at a petrol station/shop, nose in to a wall and the thing wouldn't start. (It turned out to be the earth lead had broken, I later discovered, as happens). So I had to resort to my recovery policy. Firstly, the problem the recovery policy people had was getting a garage to do it. I suspect most of them would have been happy with a Ford Ka or something, but not everyone has the equipment to sort out a Disco. Anyway, to cut this long story short, in neutral and at an obviously slow speed, the Disco was sedately winched onto the trailer without any problem. Worryingly it looked quite at home on that trailer.

If the transmission release is operated and the handbrake off and one rear wheel jacked off the ground can that wheel be rotated to maintain(adjust) the park brake shoes?
