Got my car back today after 11hrs of open-engine surgery!! Here's the offending inlet manifold, it's cracked right along the joint between the two pieces:

£1300 poorer, but she put a smile on my face driving her afterwards!!

Still contemplating sending the bill to JLR!

11 hours! Censored me that’s a big job! Anyone know what needs to come off to change the manifold?

Mikey, How much does the list alter if you only have one side done?

I had both done - they quoted 7-8hrs to do one side and it took them 11hrs to do both. The parts are actually quite cheap (about £200 inc vat per manifold).

Any benefit/cost saving to do these during a cambelt change

Yes Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

the Dealer just replaced all the hydraulic valve lifters (job done in warranty) and I forgot to tell him to change the covers....

The extra cost would have been only the purchase price of the two covers/manifolds (400-450£)

I'll never stop to Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

In the case of the timing belt change you need to add few more working hours (the change of the belts does not require the disassembly of the valve covers, injectors, ........ )

All of the fuel line pipe work is meant to be replaced (single use items) as well and those pipes all add up. I bet many non-dealers are not replacing them, but you risk a fire if one of the high pressure connectors leaks.

Found this very useful thread while searching for the issue. Our car is 5 years old with 70k miles. The right bank went a few months back which was covered under LR goodwill as LR extended warranty did not cover it. It's happened to the left bank now, and dealership are suggesting that LR won't cover a second goodwill request (awaiting LR feedback), and cost if we have to pay for it ourselves is ~£3,000 Seems ludicrous!

StormFleet,

I paid £1300 for both banks to be done at the same time. And got nowhere with JLR, they never even bothered acknowledging my email.

£3k from a dealer seems excessive.

Welcome to the forum.

It not a small job by any stretch, but £3k is ridiculous. Albeit 2.5 years ago now, my main dealer at the time charged £1500 all-in to Warranty Direct for the O/S inlet manifold.

Thumbs Up

Thanks Sheepy. Was yours under the LR warranty at the time?

No, my warranty (extended) ran out a couple of years back. I was prepared to make the argument to JLR that the part was clearly not fit for purpose given that they've since redesigned it, but decided in the end I couldn't be bothered.

When was the part re-designed?

My MY2013 recently developed the fault at 90k miles and I've just chopped it in against a 2016 Landmark - is the cracked manifold still a possibility?

Thank you for all your comments. After some debate, Land Rover agreed to fix the left bank as goodwill. Just got in back. A bit nervous going forward regarding other engine related items that aren't covered by warranty (wear and tear aside)
