D3 FBH not firing up... next steps?

Hi Everyone

I’ve done quite a bit of reading and just wanted to check my next steps.

The FBH isn’t starting up in my D3 and I can’t hear it making any attempt either.

I have tried taking out fuse 28 (engine compartment) and waiting 5 mins, reinserting and trying again - but no joy.

The temperature is 1c on the dashboard, the engine/coolant is cold and it has 1/2 tank diesel in it.

I don’t have IID at the moment but have got the club webasto diagnostic cable on order, so hopefully I can find out what is happening.

Is there anything else I can do in the meantime over the next few days while I wait for delivery?

I wondered if there is a way I can see if the webasto is being told to fire somehow with a multimeter maybe?

Top the fuel tank up to full, charge battery... should be 12,6v

Check wiring of the unit... and fuel pump...

If there is no startup attempt at all (how do you know?) its rather difficult to hear with the engine running... and all connections are ok...and you did a fuse reset... (check the car diagnostics first!) there something essential wrong, since the software does a component check first... before it starts up....

If it is just cloaked or dirty, you do hear it running first! So no sound at all.... just a clean will not help you out...

Battery voltage ?

The reading the Altox has seems to be same as seen via secret menu, which may differ from that measured across the battery terminals.

Thanks - how important is a full tank? Just wondered, not arguing.

Battery - good point, will check it. If the battery is below 12.6v engine off, but above 12.6v with running (ie alternator charging), does that mean it’s ok? Haven’t tested it yet so don’t know what it will say.

Fuel pump - where about’s is it?

I tried listening for it specifically, and then had my hand on it feeling for anything happening - plus the exhaust on it was stone cold.

The car, measures the fuel level, and if it is to low.. the FBH will not start... at all...

Since “half full” on the dail can differ from reality, i would suggest for fault finding, to exlude low fuel level, that is why is advice you to top it up...

Regarding noise.. it is important to know for diagnose direction without software, if the startup sequence is “normal” (starts to whine and dies afterwards) or does nothing at all...

Could be wrong but have you got your cabin heater on whilst testing, I was under the impression it only comes on so when it is.

Yes, cabin heater set to auto (both dots on) and not in eco mode.

Ok - have now got the diagnostic cable and had a quick look yesterday.

I started with a clearing of all the codes and reset then set it to supplementary heat mode.

Managed to get it to run but then it faulted with an 02h code.

It did run for about 2 or 3 minutes on it’s own before shutting down, so I am wondering if I just try a bit of brake / carb cleaner in the air intake and try to keep running it.

It feels like it needs a few nice long burns. The smoke when it first started up was incredible!

We then had to go out, but I did notice after we’d switched the car off for about 15 mins when we were out, the heater did start itself when I restarted the car - so at least the vehicle to FBH communication is ok.

I did run a few tests in the software too - fuel pump prime (for a very short period of time), heard the tick tick tick ok, then the combustion fan test which worked fine.

Is there anything else anyone would recommend before I try to run it again?

Glow plug test? I do have an airline too, so wondered about giving it a bit more air, but wasn’t sure how much ??

Adjusting the co2 settings?

Didn’t want to do too many things at once so I lose track of what is making a difference.

No do not spray Carb cleaner into the FBH !

You need to follow the guides to strip and clean your FBH there is obviously a problem with it, messing around can make it worse.
Strip the burner unit down and check the condition of the burner cup if its failed you will need a new burner unit.

i did give your advice in another regarding same topic, so please have read there, and my tip, keep in centrelized.. ... otherwise not effective imho..
