D4 3.0 oil change - 'How To'

D4 3.0 oil change - 'How To'

just finished with minimal drama and mess. thanks to Robbie and Flack for their help.


Remove oil cap and engine cover (lift firmly at each corner and it will pop off)

Locate 'bespoke' oil extractor fitting.



Vacuum out the warm oil using a 6 litre oil extractor(plenty on the net)
I got out just over 5 litres.(Engine oil was indicating low) you may get more.

Locate oil filter at rear of engine bay. It looks like this.



I used a 1 1/4 sae socket (fitted perfectly) I stuffed an old towel around the casing to catch any drips.

Inside of oil filter 'compartment' looks like this. Plastic fitting screws inside, so you won't make a mess when you pull the fitting out.



Now the tricky bit, removing the oil filter cartridge from the plastic housing. Inside the centre is a 4 clip arrangement that holds the filter in place.



Don't try and force the filter as it won't come out. There is a special tool that goes inside. I got lucky and found a plastic fitting in the garage that fitted inside the cage and pushed open the 4 clips in one go. Out came the filter Thumbs Up

Put the new 'O' ring on the plastic housing that comes with the filter. Smear some oil on the 'O' ring. Push the filter home firmly it should be almost level with the housing.

Install housing a screw down. It's firm to screw but will 'hit bottom' and stop. Put in 5 litres of oil, run engine, check oil level and top up as required. Done!

You should undo the oil filter first, as there is always some oil held in the housing, which drains into the sump when the filter is unscrewed Thumbs Up

So where is this? Inside the oil filler or somehwere else? My oil filler seems to be just a big hole

Do the four clips push outwards or inwards to release?
If anyone knows he address of the idiot who designed this....and the addresses of the managers who approved it...

hi, I'll have a bit of an old funnel (?) that i use, although not the exact dimensions, but it does work. outside diameter 33, inside 27. Maybe LR sell a tool? I'll check at the next official service in 2 weeks.

Odd. The full workshop manual only mentions some kind of T-bar which you could easily make (https://jlrequipment.service-solutions.com/en-GB/Pages/ItemDetail.aspx?itemID=46829&catID=337810). The strange thing is that there are no holes in the filter into which this would engage. All the videos of this type of filter element show that it just slides out although it will expand over time and become a difficult fit.
I don't see how this tool can work

It seems the 2.7 litre engine needs this tools but the 3.0 litre engine has a different size filter. In addition, the internal cage in the filter housing does not need to be removed - the paper element is meant to come out by itself.

Can the oil be drained from the sump ?

I hate this idea of sucking it out any sludge (not that there should be any) would stay in the sump then I guess.
