Diesel Clatter on acceleration

Evening all,

I’ve owned my 54 plate Disco for about 2 weeks now and am happy with it on the whole. It’s done 110k, and mainly problem free. I did a full service on the weekend with all the transmission oils too.

I have 1 query. When planting the throttle at any rev range from idle to about 2.2k, there is a sound best described as diesel clatter or “pinking” if it was an old petrol engine. Stronger the harder it’s pushed. Once past 2.2k it’s lost in a pleasant enough engine roar. If revved out of gear it sounds sweet. Ticks over fine.

Injector sound jackets are on but the plastic cover sound deadning is missing
EGRs still present
Oil and filter were clean, no sign of metallic particles
Oil light clears after 2 secs hot or cold
Been driving around 1200 miles like it since purchase

Can’t really pick it out so much if windows open or radios on/heater fan fairly high. Noticeable new otherwise.

Only other point to mention is it does have a fault if nailed up a hill full throttle. Engine system failure. Rolling restart and cleared. Not plugged in yet but I suspect: turbo, tank pump, HP pump or EGRs. Will see to that soon.

Anybody else have this prominent noise on acceleration?

When you get the codes read the logged DTC's should provide some direction and you can then post them back here. It might just be something simple like a knock sensor, or a combination of faults like EGR's as well.

Have a look at "live values" and pay particular attention to the injector balance figures, but especially those values related to anything thrown up in the DTC's.

Hi Prof, thanks for the hint. The noise has disappeared since I changed the turbo, exhaust crossover pipe, LH head recon (with all new manifold/egr/head and assorted gaskets obviously). I'm not sure what caused it and the bits were changed for other reasons, but happily resulted in a quiet engine. Thanks for the help though

@haveyoubooked

I have the same noise since I own the car (2.5 years) . When I accelerate smooth it is not to hear. When I accelerate harder the noise is to hear. When I am cornering left and accelerate the noise is louder than while cornering right.
I have tried to make a video with the noise. You have to turn up your speakers very high to hear it.

What could it be???

Yeah, I know, it is very hard to hear. A light metallic clattering noise you can here on acceleration while the first 50 meter and while acceleration in the left bend after the bridge.
Maybe with earphones it is better to hear.

Can't hear it either, just the bits in the car rolling about.

Are you sure it's diesel clatter?

I am not sure, but it sounds exactly how it is desribed by the thread Starter.
What I have to add is, my engine is overhauled by myselve last month. New pistons, bearings, valves, tappets and the Crossover pipe has no cracks. I had this noise before and also now after the revision. But this was not the reason for the revision. Reason was the 2.5L oil comsumption on 1000km.
The only old parts are the injectors. The injector balance check with IID Tool ist good and the engine runs powerful and very smooth.

Did you cure the oil burn? I know you have worked on that problem over a long period.

Yes, 4000km since engine revision and no Oil used. The fault must have been the valve stem sealings.
Found a oily exhaust manifold and valves.

Well that's good news at least, as for your current issue it's difficult to offer anything more helpful without more specific info.

As it appears to happen on a bend, is there any possibility of oil cavitation in the sump, thus pressure loss to the bearings?
It's a wild card to be honest but stranger things have happened.

Engine knock sensor?

I reckon the noise that you can hear could be coming via the wheel arches, so as you steer the harmonics change as the sound exits the wheel arches?

The car has no knocking sensors, it is EUR4 emission class. Only the early ones had knocking sensors.
Here are two more videos. If you put on some headphones you can hear the noise.
