Disco 3 Side Vent Questions….!

Went to change the RH front wing air vent grille this afternoon (it was damaged by previous owner) interestingly, when I removed the inner rubber bit that connects to the air intake pipe, below that is a kind of triangular recess in the body stuffed with what looks something like a polythene bag of wet / water with a kind of sponge in it!!! I was a bit reluctant to trail it all out in case it is his part of something useful or special ? Never seen anything like it before…. Any ideas or knowledge appreciated.

Also there is a foam insert thing that looks like the side of the intake chute that I found stuffed down there. It looks to be part of the intake but anyone any idea where that should go too before I fix the new grille in place? If it fits to the side it virtually covers the sunroof drain outlet!

Attached photo of wet bag thing…. Any ideas?.

Many thanks, D.

Last time I did my sunroof drain
I didnt bother putting it back in
It was all acting like a sponge and I
decided I'd rather have it dry in there
and lwt the drain do its job
I burst the foam removing it anyway

Nudge: Does anyone have a clue as to what the wet spongy bag thing is or what it does? Really interested if it is present on anyone else’s Disco or is it something someone has put there ?

Just reluctant to trail it out at the moment as it might be fixed to something. Cheers, D.

sound proofing I expect.

But if its wet, you may as well bin it before it causes rust

Curiosity got the better of me and I carefully squeezed it snd manipulated it out. Turns out it’s a huge triangular piece of foam in a plastic bag !!! I assume it’s in the bag to prevent it becoming a soaking wet sponge but I managed to squeeze a pint of water out of it (small hole in bag). Will leave it to dry in the sun for a few days. Might be worth checking yours to prevent corrosion… But why is it there in the first place!
