Disco 3 v 911 comparison
Having recently bought a 20 year old 911 as a bit of a project, I've realised a couple of things:
- how brilliant this web site is as a font of all wisdom and knowledge
- that we give Land Rover/D3's a hard time, but a similar age Porsche has even more random/peculiar/annoying/similar problems
One of the classics is the date, which you can't set manually. Not the end of the world I appreciate, but annoying. Apparently it gets its date setting from GPS Nav (not that all the various 911 websites agree on this point), but due to an April 19 global GPS change, now no longer works because the Nav doesn't/can't support the new format. Why not just provide a manual setting for the date!!
It's just one of many examples that make me appreciate this website and my old D3 so much more.
Moral of the story. If your D3 is driving you up the wall, go and buy a different (old) vehicle and realise they're all much of a muchness and the D3 isn't so bad after all

Whoah ! Interesting as I want to buy an older 911 at some point, but have done no homework.
Is there an IID equivalent that may do the job ?

I've used the AUTEL (discussed elsewhere on here) tool and added Porsche to the diagnostic capability (you get one free, which I selected Land Rover) and buy any additional manufacturers (about £20 per manufacturer). It works well and does the job.
20 year old 996 911 purchasing is a bit of a nightmare (again a bit like a D3!)
Worth it though and lots of fun!

Very nice ........... and shiny.
A welcome distraction from the madness of this so-called 'new' world.

I think 996 engines are even more prone to destroying themselves than D3 engines.

You don’t have to go back 20 years, just try a 10 year old Mini Cooper with a steering lock fault, it’s cost me nearly £1000 and 3 months of agro so far and it is still stood dead on my drive
If the steering lock fails(slow or sticks) an unknown number of times(2/3?) the complete system locks out, BMW claim it is for security, they do not sell the lock on its own as it is riveted onto the steering column and that costs £1200+ without fitting or being programmed to the system, when the Car Access System module throws a fault it cannot be reset it is a one shot format and has to be pre-programmed by rip off BMW for £500 who will not supply one without seeing the V5 reg document.
I can’t find a diagnostic tool for a BMW Mini that will reset the CAS counter on the steering lock without going into the super league of cost.
Makes D3/4 ownership along with its failings a real pleasureIt can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

this is a great thread demonstrating to all that Land Rover/D3's aren't so bad
Every bolt I've attempted to undo so far has either sheared off or rounded off, or/and the classic, spanner slips off and remove skin on knuckles.
With the Disco, 9 times out of 10, I can come on here and find a definitive answer. With the 911, there's 14,000 different forums all with different views and very little actual detailed info.
Loving the Mini story.... it's made me feel better.

Recently bought a R56 Mini Cooper S as a project to work on. 58,000mls with full service history. It`s already had a new timing chain, full clutch inc flywheel, leaks oil like a series Land Rover! and has a folder of invoices for thousands of pounds for work done over the years. I bought it with a misfire and the MIL light on which turned out to be a piston with a large part of the skirt broken off and all 3 rings broken. Luckily no bore damage so all rebuilt and running fine but looking at some of the common issues the Mini`s have it makes Land Rover look like the pinnacle of reliability! ( have to say however that my current and previous Land Rovers have all been hassle free!)

There was a sweet spot on cars, somewhere between 98 and about 2004 where just about any car could be bought and run to starship mileages with only the most routine and basic maintenance of consumables.
Then Euro 3 happened and it all turned a bit poop
Similar happened to motorbikes around the same time to be fair but that really only effected fuelling and it took them a good ten years to consistently sort it.
I guess though when the average life of a car runs at 14 years and reducing year on year its really all understandable
I take pride in doing my bit to take the average the other way !05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system
