DIY Mapping

Is it possible to simply replace the chip DIY style without further complex work ? Even if it only brings half the improvement of the full professional service service it woud be useful for non UK based D3'ers (new word?) Reckon my dealer would be a bit confused though...

A "chip" no longer involves changing the processor or memory in an engine ECU as the majority are Flash based and can be reprogrammed with new software/maps rather than being replaced. However the phrase "chipping" has stuck!

There are some DIY handheld programmers on the market for petrol cars which use the onboard diagnostic port, however I'm not sure if anything like this is being developed for the D3?

I would not even start contemplating the legal aspect of such a tool... Would probably be illegal in some countries as being akin to reverse-engineering...

Now, that would be very nice to be able to use a PDA to be able to flash a chip onboard the car using the Onboard Diagnostic Port. I am not sure if that would be feasible though...
