I’m running two sets of rims/tyres at the moment, GG AT3 & Pirelli Verdre All Seasons. Both in 20” as that’s the smallest I can fit on my model FFRR.
If you’re not going to encounter deep mud off road, the All Seasons combined with correct use of the TR system will be more than sufficient.
I managed one wet winter (2019) of regular weekly off road use with just the All Seasons. I never actually got stuck but had a couple of tense moments, which is why I got a set of GG AT3.
If you watch the Harry Metcalfe video that was recently posted on here, he ran his new Defender 90 off road on his farm on All Seasons and was amazed!
The All Seasons are quieter and more fuel efficient than any of the AT options.

Hi, I had the Pirelli All season on a 2007 RR Sport(255.55x20). It managed everything I threw at it and no problem keeping up
on off road days with the local LR club. Including tracks where low range is required.
Good road manners and lasted well. No idea how they are in winter, as where I live I use
dedicated winter tyres.

Re: sidewalls and potential for damage, Hugh (HWN) on this forum ended up getting (from memory) 3 damaged sidewalls with the Duratrac. No tyre is immune if you meet the right (wrong) stone or root, etc.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Mostly on road with wintertime off road at shoots on farm tracks and muddy fields. I lve in a very rural area and they have coped really well with snow and ice so have no hesitation in recommending them for both on and off road..

It is one of the two things concerning me, speed rating and noise level on road surfaces. I do notice they carry an LR-approved accreditation. I also note the new one's carry an R rating (not much extra, but some).
Anyway, I need to make a choice tomorrow and get done, GG AT3 or Duratrac (which also may be overkill for my use).

It’s nothing to do with the safety of the tyre, it’s how they are rated. I asked Goodyear a few years back why they changed the speed rating from S (I think they were)
“Dear Rob, the Duratrac in a number of sizes is now marketed as a Professional Off Road Tyre (P.O.R. ). This for some of the tyres has become necessary due to changes in tyre labelling. P.O.R tyres are exempt from the labelling grades eg amount of external -noise produced.
As part of the criteria to make a tyre Professional Off Road its speed rating can be no higher than Q. FYI Q = 100 mph.”

Load rating is arguably more important than speed rating. The speed rating is just the maximum speed that the tyre has been tested as being good to run at its maximum load. So unless one is going to load up the vehicle to its maximum allowed mass and then drive it at significantly over the speed limit, you gain nothing from the higher speed rating. A higher load rating, on the other hand, gives you a greater margin at all normal speeds.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

So, decided on Duratrac's. I have to say i was worried about noise levels - what noise levels - perfect.
Initially feel good and very responsive on a dry road, gravel and light mud - main test to come.

You will be happy with them. I have them on my D5 and they have been excellent. Just remember though... They are not winter rated, so if you drive in an area that requires Winter Tires (Germany for example) then they will not be accepted and you risk having insurance issues if you have an accident.
Otherwise... They are excellent.
I live in Luxembourg and switch between the GG AT3 for the winter and the Duratrac for the summer.
The AT3 is quieter and in the wet does give better grip, but the Duratrac is better off-road!!
Don't compare the AT3 to the AT2... Completely different tire, tread pattern etc.
Thank you for your comments. I went for the Duratracs due the amount of wet mud we experience here on our roads, which are dry steep and narrow.
I had AT2’s on my two D3’s and had two issues otherwise I loved them. They were hopeless on light wet mud and both had thinning of rims issue and I had to buy new alloys. Probably the AT3 are improved from the 2’s.

Another fan of Duratracs here, run them on my work Discovery that is always fully loaded and often towing to max capacity. Great tyre that does everything, put a fresh set on a couple of weeks ago ready for winter - the ones that came off had done 62k miles and still had 7mm showing. Sold the set that came off for £200!
