Anything post 2007 > EU4 will need the software update to stop the EML light coming on.
If you need the MOT before affording then software update - buy an Autel code reader and erase the EML codes, it should stay off long enough to get you through an MOT.
Emissions wise, blanking the EGR’s will still pass the MOT.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

You technically need them installed and working (with no light on) to pass an MOT.
Many people blank them off but leave the pipes in place, then get a software update to switch the light off.
You have an 08 car and this will be required (the software). Pre 07 models don't need the software patch as failing EGR valves don't bring the engine light on.
MOT testers can't dismantle things to test them, so as long as a visual check of the EGR pipes etc is all good, then you should be ok.

Don't remove the EGR's, just order a blanking kit and remove the butterfly from the throttle housing You can then upload a software patch via your GAP IID diagnostic tool to tell the PCM to ignore the EGR's. (BAS Remaps)
All of this leaves the system 95% intact and there is no visual evidence of modification. The 5% that is visible is under the engine cover where the pipes would have previously connected to the throttle housing.
The tester won't (can't) remove the cover.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks for the replies
Are the egr valves serviceable
Can you take them off and clean them?

You can remove and replace / clean but you’ll probably be doing it again in a few months. Best to blank. There’s a good place on J6 M6 that did my reprogramming to remove them from the ecu if you don’t mind a little drive down from Derby. The physical Blanking is pretty simple to do, if you need help I’m happy to give you a hand2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

I've got a mate who can do everything
I'm just trying to figure out the best option
Can you leave them in and just delete on computer so they don't work
Did that on a vauxhall I had a few years ago

Yep, you leave them in but need to blank, if they get stuck in the open position, get the fire extinguisher ready as they keep pumping hot exhaust gas to the manifold until it melts :s2008 HSE Stornoway Grey
