Battery Failure

At 1,800 miles the message centre displayed various messages, such as transmission failure. Flaut was traced to a cracked battery which was leaking fluid and had corroded terminals. Battery replaced by dealer.

Just thought I should let the forum know that many of the electrical 'failures' described may be as a result of poorly connected wiring looms. We had 1 customer car that was continually bringing on engine management lights and testbook kept indicating 'power failures' and 'loss of canbus communication.

Eventaully we checked all the wiring looms and connectors on the vehicle and found both loose connectors and overstressed wiring due to poor routing.

The car had run fine ever since....it took the landrover dealer over 6 weeks to diagnose the problem..but thats another story

Hi All,

My Disco3 was collected from the Dealer on 08/12/04 and it is currently back with the Dealer for the second time since I collected it! The electronic park brake failed....ON. A cracking device because the car would not overcome the brake. New wiring loom was the cure because both ends of the affected loom were badly corroded....at 6,000 miles and 3 months old. More worrying is that while it was stood still at the Dealers the waste-gate electronic control failed which resulted in a new turbocharger having to be fitted. At the present time the Disco is putting on the hazard warning flashers/the central locking (on and off in time with the hazard lights), the heater blower (in time with the hazard warning lights), showing a park brake system fault....All when the ignition is turned off!! and to make life interesting the fault is intermittent.

Great to find this site. Very good to browse through and I have seen some familiar problems. Mine has intermittent parking distance control as well. All the problems began with a non-dipping/dipping near-side door mirror when in reverse gear. That problem still exists even after a new drivers seat memory ECU was fitted. By selecting the driver seat memory the near-side mirror will move back to the right position from being dipped after having used reverse gear.

Bad situation

I bought my car new in June. The car was brought in by an importer because there is no dealer where i live. The next morning the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and sat firmly in Fail safe mode. Transmission failure was showing in the message centre and the car had no suspension. A call to Land Rover in the UK was made they suggested disconnecting the battery for 30 mins which cured the problem. Until the next morning when it returned. Removed the battery but to no avail. We ended up lifting the car to it's correct driving height and then removing the battery - fault gone. We then realised after reading a US web site that the car wakes up after 2 hours and checks itself and again after 6 hours. As long as we started the car every 5 hours we didn't have the problem. We did this all the way to Istanbul...a 2500kms journey that took 4 days and 3 countries. The Istanbul agent said it was a software problem. Ran it for a week without any issues and it's been good ever since. Never did find out what the problem was but assume they were correct in their diagnosis as stated no problem since!!

Sad I had a problem with the car illuminating lots of lights with a gearbox fault code and the suspension lowering, took it to the stealers and they reloaded the software. It lasted a week and it happened again, left the car overnight and the failures reset. It then lasted one day and happened again, took it again to the stealers who said it was a brake switch. Changed that and so far it has not failed (3 days), i took the old switch apart and it looks ok. Rolling Eyes

My brake switch made a funny crunching sensation today at a junction, then all the warning lights came on, and I ended up in limp-home mode Sad

Reset with the ignition key - and everything recovered

Brake switch has been fine on the way home, no other christmas tree effects since.

Anyone done the brake switch swap-out?

How difficult a job is it?

The Battery Warning Ligth

Just to let you of my new exeperience...

Friday was a cold day and we had to wait in the car for around 2 hours. The engine was running idle and seat warming was in heavy use...

The waiting was completed and on the way home - the battery warning light came on. According to the owners manual, this indicates something is wrong, you should avoid driving - and get the car repaired. I called the service center and they recommended me to get it towed and of course, their calendar was booked.

I am the first owner of a LR3 HSE from 2007, so no warrenty and have just finished replacement process of the second suspension compressor, and was thinking: I do not trust this car any more... - So the car is for sale now - and I went to the Toyota dealer to buy a small enviromental friendly car...

Saturday morning, I decided to charge the battery. Went to the shop for a ctek 7000. On the way to the shop, the battery warning light went off... - bought the ctek and a voltmeter, went home and checked the volt: was 12.05V with stopped engine and 13.6V when iddling. The ctek was engaged and the battery is now 100% - and battery warning light is off.

So the battery warning light can also indicate "just" low voltage - meaning: Did you abuse your battery - then try power everything off and drive on for at least half an hour (with plenty of rpm - >2000rpm) - if battery warning light is still on - get it towed.

Thomas
