Evening, 2.7 tdv6 not being friendly.

Hi hope everyone is well. Wondering if anyone can shed some light on an issue please?

I have a 2005 2.7 tdv6 sport. (Sorry i know its not a d3)
Which one of my lads uses as a company car. Well this evening. He rang me to say it just wouldnt start again 5 mins after he cut the engine.

I went down and had a look, pump relay is fine, can hear the LP pump kicking in and I have fuel at the Schrader.

Wouldnt start, pulled the intake and managed to get her running on some Sure deodorant lol.

Issue is, it just wont rev over 1500rpm at a push. She hobbled home at 5mph.

Loads of white smoke for 10 mins or so then smoke stopped. I suspect was excess fuel in the exhaust being burnt off..

No mil light etc.

Any ideas or pointers?

Many thanks.

really need to get a code reader as it could be myriad of things from simple faulty sensor to blocked fuel pipe

My bet is broken chain in passenger head. But that is wild ass guess

Edit. Probably not, if you managed to drive it

Morning, yes managed to drive it back a couple of miles but it struggled. Had to push it up a hill with my van as didnt have the power.

It certainly seems like a fuel issue. What pressure should I be getting at the schraeder?

Will try and grab a code reader from someone. Its not got any Mil lights on though.

Fuel filter hasnt been changed for a while so will also swap that.

Cheers

I would start by fitting a good quality fuel filter and dont forget to prime the new filter by turning the ignition on for 30 seconds then off for 5 seconds repeat three times to be sure before attempting to start the engine.
These engines can take forever to start if you run the high pressure system out of fuel and with your current problem you will find it a lot harder to diagnose.

Hi all update. Been back under the bonnet today.

So definately fuel, LP pump is fine at 0.5bar.

Starts and idles rough,

If i pull power on one of the drivers side injectors, it cuts out.

If I pull all 3 injector power to passenger side, it stays running exactly the same.

Issue is definately passenger bank.

I have 12v on green/pos battery, but nothing on both injector terninals. Assume green is just ground?

How do I check the injector power? Does each bank have a seperate fuse?

Cheers Gareth

You really shouldn’t unplug plug injectors in while running in these cars.
They can stay stuck open as piezo

Maybe my first guess was correct! Passenger chain and no compression on that side

Hi Pete, didnt know that mate, thanks for the heads up. Why do you mean by chain? I thought the 2.7 uses a timing belt? If the part you say has gone, is it a right off engine or easy fix?

Cheers Gareth

Just googled it. So theres a chain within the rocker cover that operates the timing for inlet and outlet as well as the timing belt. 😩. Doesnt sound good.

Are these non destructive, and how hard to change the chain as set back up? Are the cam timing marks marked up?

Thanks Again

Some people have been lucky fitting a new chain.
Other have fitted a second hand head.

Getting the passenger cam cover off is a bit of a pig. There are guides on here
Once off. Fitting a new chain isn’t too bad. There are marks

Thanks mate will give it a search. Would you say swap the chain and see how it goes from there?

Cheers.

I guess the first step is to remove the passenger injectors (or front 2 easy ones anyway) and prove there is no compression.

I think you need to refit the injectors to metal pipes if you can, to block off the fuel system, as its very high pressure. Leave wiring disconnected. and remove fuel pump fuse. (there will still be dangerous pressure though)

Thanks pete, will order a compression tester now.

Out of interest. You say the pas side cover is a pain to remove. Is this the same on a sport do you know?

Mines a sport, not a disco.

Cheers Gareth
