FBH compatibility

Hi, I'm having problems with my FBH, sometimes it starts sometimes not... I can run the self test from my IID and it starts for a few seconds, smokes then stops. I've decided to rebuild it, I have the new seals and gasket.

I'm thinking of getting another unit to rebuild and then just swap them over, prices seem pretty reasonable on Ebay.

Question is are all D3 units the same ? Mine is 2005, can I fit one from any D3 or even a later D4 ?

Thanks

Mat

As the CAN-BUS signal on D4 is different as the D3... avoid the D4 fbh

OK thanks for the heads up, I bought a D3 version, so when it arrives I'll rebuilt it at my leisure and then swap it over for my original. Also I'll have a source of spares If needed Smile

Let me know how you get on with this Mat, having problems with my own (just not starting at all) and was thinking of doing the same. Have been eyeing the ebay ones but wasn't sure. I had a guy take mine to bits and service/clean it. It worked the first time, then stopped a day later. Rolling Eyes

OK will do, the Ebay one turned up yesterday, looks OK from the outside. I probably wont get round to stripping and swapping it over for a week or two.

You can fit a D4 FBH to a D3 as long as you use the D3's circuit board from the D3 FBH.

So I stripped cleaned and rebuilt the replacement heater, new seals and gaskets. It was in pretty good shape, not to much coke and carbon build up.

Swapped it all over yesterday, but same problem.

I can prime it with my iid tool, and when it ties to start I hear it starting to fire up, but it's a bit intermittent, like a spluttering noise as it's burning. It does this for about 5 seconds, smokes a bit then stops.

Every time it throws up a fault code, failed to start during test cycle.

I'm starting to think it's a problem with the dosing pump ?

Any ideas ?

If you have the webasto software and lead you can test out the pump.

Hi Flack, thanks, this may be my next step to help diagnose the problem.

The pump must be working of sorts, because if I go through the prime routine, the next test cycle it smokes like crazy when starting, and I primed it a couple of times and noticed some fuel dripping out of the exhaust joint as it was starting to burn.

Maybe a blockage somewhere that's stopping the smooth flow of fuel that it needs to run correctly, but lets enough through on the prime cycle to flood it ???

If the heater has a stored fault, do you have to clear that on the heater and then clear the main ecu dtc as well or should clearing the main ecu dtc also clear the heater fault.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is, does the car ecu take precedent and can unlock a heater or are they separate entities

Don't keep priming it, you're flooding the heater with diesel and ultimately causing more problems.

Priming should ONLY be used with a heater that is known to be empty of fuel. Not as part of a diagnostic of a faulty/misbehaving heater.

The iid tool can read and reset the FBH. So basically when I try and test it, it fails to start correctly, logs a fault code and locks out. To get it to try and start again I have to clear the fault in the iid tool, after which it will try again either in test mode or if I start the car normally (as it's -2C outside)

Yes understood, I primed it when I fitted the replacement rebuilt unit, and it didn't fire up properly, so I thought maybe air in the line ?

I only tried to prime it once more.

I might try priming it with the fuel line disconnected and submersed in a glass jar with diesel in to see if there's air being drawn through ?

It's interesting because mines playing up. I'd ran the sdd and mongoose on it on Saturday and did 3 or 4 full tests where it performed fine yet its still whingeing over something and not working under normal operation . I cleared the ecu dtcs but dont know if I need to reset the heater independently. The original stored code was the previous owner had run it low on fuel and caused the heater lockout.
I have got the remote mod attached so I'm wondering if also needed to do the reset on that as well as the clearing codes.

Something worth trying as it sorted mine out, posted by others on the forum, if you have an airline, put the nozzle in the FBH air intake and inject air as it starts, let it go through the startup with the air going in, mine gave an intitial puff of smoke then ran fine.
Starts every time, now no smoke at all.
I know I was lucky but I'm chuffed to bits it worked.
