Front End Knock

Hello all,

I have a knock from the front end, which appears at about 60 to 80kmh (37 to 50mph).

It disappeared when driving through fairly heavy rain.

I thought it may be a sticky brake caliper as the drive seemed to become laboured as the knocking became worse (in the dry).

I have a ramp booked for the weekend to have a good look around, but any pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers,

James

The easiest ones for me are drop links and anti roll bar bushes and track rod ends, then onto top and bottom arms if not the 1st 2

if rain does make it go away, then it looks like you're on the right lines with the brakes ... I can't think of anything else the cooling would affect much.

The drop links are good and the upper and lower arms seem ok, the ARB bushes are only about 8000km old.
But that's why I have the ramp booked so I can have a good old pry at the running gear and hopefully spot something I've missed with the vehicle on the ground.

@Hardware Thanks, good to know that my thinking is somewhat confirmed.

Have you been able to identify the cause of the knocking sound?

Not so far, last weekend turned into a bit of a mess so I rebooked the ramp for this coming Saturday (24th).
It seems to be brake related as the pedal feel is not consistent.

Finally got the time to work on my front end knock.

Checked all of the front end, r/h wheel bearing has a bit of movement so that'll be done soon; the centre propshaft bearing mounting is very worn, so that's on the list; I also have a slight oil leak from the vacuum pump.

But, the cause of the knocking was indeed the brakes. The O ring interface to the servo on the master cylinder was damaged, it must have happened during installation.

Once the vehicle was up to temperature the brakes started to grab. Releasing the bolt on the master cylinder mount released the pressure.

The brake pressure reading would increase as high as 733kpa whilst driving but once the bolt was released it dropped to 33kpa and the car became drivable.

If you can get access to a ramp I would recommend it wholeheartedly. It makes life for the DIYer so much easier.

The O ring has been replaced and it seems ok so far.

I'll update if it returns.
