Grease up your turbo actuator rod IMMEDIATELY!

Hi folks, to get the full attention this information deserves I thought it best to create a new thread.

It came from this thread regarding Engine System Fault:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic122016.html

My car has stood still for 2 weeks apart from a quick trip round the corner for glow plug replacement. After picking up the car it cam back with ESF and a massive reduction in power. To say I sh11t myself is an understatement. After doing some digging, I found a wonderful 'how to' from A.J.M and after completing the instructions it feels like my Disco is a brand new vehicle! I can't thank A.J.M and the members of this forum enough - you're all great!

So in summary, if you get Turbo fault codes and a huge loss of power, don't fear - there's a good chance that it could just be the turbo actuator rod has seized and needs a good greasing and 'working in'.

I'm sure that this is probably common knowledge to the forum but with the salty, wet weather, I thought it was worth a forum bump - thanks again.

Here are the instructions below:

FIXED!!!

Checked the map sensor and it was clean, so no problem there.

So, Time to get to that actuator from above.

Disconnect battery and remove it from the bay.
Split the red side as i had to move them apart to get other stuff free.
3 13mm nuts to be removed.
Disconnect the air con pipe bracket with a 8mm nut.
Remove the black philips screw.
Twist the white connector block and remove.
The battery tray has 3 seperate parts that remove.
1 pulls up, 1 pulls from under the scuttle area and the other is large and held in with 4 clips.
Remove the heat shield, this just pulls up and slide forwards to the front of the engine.

This lets you get access to the actuator rod.

Mine was very VERY stiff, so pushed down first with a round file and hooked the wire round to pull back up, the range of movement is about an inch or so.
Repeat this and spray WD40 or similar every time you move it.
Repeat till moving freely.

Thank the LR gods for showing mercy to you.

Reassemble the stuff and start car.

Thank the LR gods again for it not showing up any warning bongs etc.

Take drive and enjoy having a working actuator.

Final step will be to strip it all down to check up and continue the spray and push/pull to make sure.

Massive thanks to Disco Mikey for the advice over the phone and to other's for having a guide so i could see what i was trying to free up.

Hopefully i've sorted it properly as with my job security very uncertain i can't have a bill of a new turbo hanging over me.

Cheers Alan but all credit goes to A.J.M and Disco Mikey.

The car feels like brand new and is nippier than I can ever remember.

I'm really chuffed.

Thumbs Up

I sprayed mine with spray grease. Not sure if it helped or not but the actuator was fine when I sold it after 8 years. Then again, there are probably older vehicles running ok without any grease, but it made me feel good.

I also sprayed something near it that was not the actuator on my first attempt...

See, what you really need is leaking rear camshaft oil seal. Whistle

No faffing about removing the battery, battery tray, heat shields and all that malarkey. Just a regular drip of oil onto the turbo keeps everything running smoothly.

I'm convinced the designers at Land Rover thought about this. Rolling Eyes

Really easy to do, if a bit fiddly.

I tried the coat hanger method for grabbing onto the rod but I found a short hook tool was bob on. I didn't put any grease on to begin with, I wanted to see if it was seized and my turbo wasn't fubarred. At first, it wouldn't move at all. So I covered the Censored with lithium grease and started rattling it until it budged. Then worked the grease in about ten times. It certainly wasn't a smoothe as the video shows as I was at a crazy angle and have hands like a cow's udder!

Got there in the end and the difference is brilliant. Nice knowing that I've prevented further issue for a while, too.

Glad my write up has helped another person.

Would like to say that I did that in July 2013, car is still running perfectly fine and the ESF has not repeated itself.
Mileage then would be about 109k or so, it's sitting it's under 132k now.

Oh cock.

Went to the gym this morning Engine System Fault + lack of power.

Got to the gym. Turned her off. Empty car park so thought I'd try a blast and as soon as I turned her over she was back to normal.

Get back in the car after an hour and ESF again. Took her out for a blast but still have the same problem.

Perhaps I should give the actuator arm a second coating!

The lithium grease will not have lasted long. It is great for very low temperatures but not on a hot turbo. I'm sure your efforts will last longer with a lubricant for high temperatures.

Robbie, you're bang on the money!

Lithium grease is no good.

I coated the Censored up with WD40 and it seems to have gotten in all of the cracks and fixed the issue.

Can anyone recommend a better grease for long term, high temperature lubrication?

There was a thread a while ago suggesting Mouse Milk. http://www.mousemilk.com Just googled it and it does indeed exist. Is this the solution?

This was the 2nd Google suggestion. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2789213/ In case you want to grow yer own, so to speak. Laughing

Thanks for this thread ,
Ive only had my disco a couple of week and thought it to be very numb on power , particularly on the pick up you have to give it a real boot full to get it going ,
I thought it was just how they are ,
but ill try the actuator lubing tonight and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks ,

Hi Dave, go with WD40 and make sure you grease UNDERNEATH AND AROUND the actuator and work it in a few times as per the video above.
