Headlamp bulb puzzle
I wanted to get a replacement headlamp bulb for my Disco 4 2015, so decided to go to my local Halfords. I used their electronic gizmo to find the right type, as I couldn't remember the exact sort (it's an HRI2) and the gizmo kept saying it was a H7. I asked the lady on the till, and she came up with the same result. After looking at the bulbs and getting nowhere, she asked for assistance. This is where it gets interesting. The guy said that Halfords no longer sold bulbs for Discoveries, as they put out to much power and the bulbs only last a very short time. Now, as an electrician and radio amateur, we were always told that at a given voltage the current supplied depends on the load connected, in the same way that you will get the same shock from a 240volt light socket as you would from the supply into the property at the meter, or indeed the low voltage side of the transformer at the sub station. Am I missing something? Perhaps Discos have a higher voltage at the headlamps? Any one?LR 4 se

H7 is the halogen that some Discos are fitted with.
HIDs are completely different. HIR2 sounds like a H7 halogen to xenon upgrade.
Standard fit HIDs are much more expensive.
Halfords sell many variants for the halogen fitment but not HID upgrade or tru HID bulbs from what I can see.Current : Discovery 4 HSE (2012 spec)

Absolutely correct! Just goes to show how paying peanuts gets monkeys, Halfords do actually stock D3S Xenons. Expensive though, £60 odd quid each side.

Seeing how Halfords near me , attack vehicles, when fitting anything from Headlamp bulbs to wiper blades I wouldn't let them near any of my vehicles. I am sure some places are better than others but !

Definately halogen bulbs, but my question is more about the claim that Landrovers put out too much power!LR 4 se

The alternator can put out 15.something volts depending on load and battery conditions. In the CCF the halogen setting is to keep the initial voltage down to prevent the bulbs from blowing on startup, which I know they do from experience.

there are still some tiny bits of blue glass visible inside my headlamp unit
Replaced them with Osram bulbs when a second one went.

As discussed on other threads here, the HIR2 bulb is used on a few D4's (including mine) and is a single filament for main and dipped beam utilising a mechanical shutter.
Mine was discovered blown on my MOT and the garage replaced it for £30 which was the supplied cost.
The issue I have is the vast difference in price for a HIR2 bulb. Even on eBay they range from £7 for a Jap car up to £50 for a 'Discovery/Range Rover' named HIR2. Some are described as 9012 HIR2.
Is there a difference between all these as I want to hold a spare or two?Dave

Is possible to fit Light Emitting Diodes to a D4?
Extremely bright & white, and probably draw less current than normal Xenon/ HID lamps.
Would LED’s upset the delicate electronics of these complex though?

Yes, Ive done it, 1/4 of the price of xenon and twice as bright and adapted the cornering lamps to LED. MY2014 facelift It can when others can't,
