Information on buying a D3

Hi new to the forum here, just wanted to join and ask a few questions. I'm thinking of buying a D3, I've wanted one for a while now I actually wanted a D4 but as I live in Ireland they are crazy money so ended up with audi A6 avant. That is being sold shortly so I'm looking at a D3, I want to spend 5k max and it will be a commercial, or crew cab theres loads about over here and they are cheap tax.
I've done some research but not much, its kind of a minefield of horror stories, im aware of torque converters, handbrake, Air compressor, faulty wiring but that's it.
Is there anything I should look out for especially expensive.?
I'm looking at 2005 to 2007 years. Am I right in thinking that some problems should be sorted.? Obviously with proof, im not too worried about milage as cars over here have been to the moon and back. I'm pretty handy with cars myself so its the big garage bills im worried about.

Thanks

Joe

Oil pump and belts... absolutely essential at that age and mileage! The more history you can get the better... ideally see if there's one on the forum for sale within your criteria... (don't know how hard it is to import to Eire)
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Yeh I would say the timing belts have been replaced on alot of them due to milage, but also over here its part of your MOT.
I wouldn't touch one without receipts to prove the work, there's actually one for sale here, the guy wants 3200 euro and he says its had 6 to 7k spent on it in the last 3 years it has no mot though, as he says he has a new one and the d3 has been sat there since, people over here are reluctant to buy a car without mot, it might be worth a look.
Importing has been made harder since brexit, im actually from the UK myself, I brought my A6 in to the country coming on 2 years and its worth what I paid for it still, there's loads of charges now based on emissions so your looking at about 5k to import one maybe more. Commercial are cheaper to bring over but I think you have to prove you're self employed.

So i went to drive a 2008 discovery today, it has the belts, oil pump, both egrs, turbo, and a new compressor, guy wants 9000 euro for it.

On the drive I accelerated hard a few times, he let me go out on my own in it, there was a judder around 2500 revs it stopped about 3000. Is this a torque converter problem..?

Its my first time driving a disco, it kind of felt a bit sluggish maybe it's because I'm use to a manuel gearbox, I had an auto Ford use years ago but that was a ball of Censored , so I have nothing to compare it to.

does sound like torque convertor.

From a stand still they should move fairly rapidly, and then run out of puff.

Maybe try it in sports mode next time

Performance of a 180HP motor moving 2.5 tonnes or more, is never going to be exciting. Probably similar to a hatchback of half the power and half the weight.

Yeh I kind of didn't expect it to be quick, something didn't feel right anyway. Plus its from a dealer i would rather buy one from somebody on here or at least with proof the work has been done.
It was definitely juddering though.

What would be the cost to run one of these D3s yearly..?

Taking away the cost of major parts and diesel and tax. And assuming nothing major go's wrong. Is the regular service expensive on average.?
I plan on buying one with timing belts done and also oil pump.
Also has anybody owned a manual.? If so is there any problems with clutch or a DMF to be dealing with.?
