When is an approved used Land Rover........

.........possibly not?

Can anybody clarify, for once and for all, how long a' warranty' or 'guarantee' should last when a used car is bought from a car trader? I have been told that a) There is none, you have to purchase one, b) 3 months and c) 6 months.

A used Discovery 3 that I found at a franchised LR dealer that is advertised as an approved used vehicle complete with warranty, will only have a 3 month warranty upon sale. Any further warranty would need to be purchased at around £1000. LR's own website says that the minimum 'Select' warranty is for 6 months and other LR dealers that I have contacted in relation to advertised approved D3's all say that their vehicles come with a 1 year warranty?

Whilst I'm on the topic(ish)...... if a dealer sells a car, should it not have a tax disc? Do approved Disco's come with tax or is that another £x on top of the screen price to be accounted for?

A bewildered and confused Tb2!

With the warranty it depends greatly on the age and mileage of the vehicle.

and ...no they don't have to provide tax unless they state that it's an "on the road" price ...but this should be a prime negotiating point tbh Thumbs Up

A good dealer who has his customers at heart would normally give some kind of warranty, if it was me and they didn't, I'd go elsewhere, there are plenty of Discoverys in the 2nd hand market to choose from Whistle

Example, I bought my D3 HSE 2nd hand from a non LR dealership, Lexus/Toyota in Cheltenham to be exact, (they had taken it in as a px) and it was on their forecourt at a good price and I was given a full no quibble 12 month warranty included in the asking price and 12 months tax during this time they replaced the steering rack, fixed a suspension fault, and changed all the ARB bushes and drop links to cure a suspension knock, I also had a full service and a subsequent MOT all FOC.

And when I had a electronic fault which they couldn't fix due to the Toyota diagnostic kit being incompatible they happily sent the car over the the nearest LR main dealer to sort out Very Happy

So . . If a dealer is a good one he will go that extra mile to ensure you are a happy customer, which this dealer has certainly done for me Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

It was a 2006 vehicle with @40k miles. Well within the LR 'select' warranty range both in terms of miles and age.

I would have had to have taxed it as well, with no movement on the screen price.

Funnily enough, I'm still looking for a D3!

i thought (possibly wrongly looking at this) that all LR approved used cars came with a one year warranty, and now having read the website it should be 6 months. If the rest is a good deal then I would print that off and shove it under their nose, if they don't go elsewhere and e mail customer services.

surely a franchised dealer should follow what is on the LR web site, or they shouldn't be calling it an approved used car? If they want to do something else, call it something else

The website gives an overview of the scheme..I would bet 10p that there are T's & C's to go with it though Wink

EDIT ...though I do agree with that Dave Thumbs Up

For it to be approved it has to follow the LR scheme, otherwise it can't be approved. However I know some dealers who are selling on a LR forecourt and then claim they are selling it on their own scheme and not the approved one, despite it being advertised as approved on the LR website.

When I bought mine I had the full year warranty included and as part of the deal had it extended to 3..

My dealer said that some other chains really cut the warranty cover on supposed Approved Vehicles and even send you off with only 3 months non LR warranty.

If they are advertising as approved should meet the minimum LR standards, I'm sure I can guess the chain and its probably the same one I walked away from never to look at again

I tend to agree, but they are a business and can make the rules up as they go along. Their argument would be, if you don't like it, buy from another dealership.

+1 Thumbs Up

A few years ago I bought a Merc ML270 2 years old with 12 months "signature" warranty, 6 months on the dash lit up like the proverbially Xmas tree and no instruments worked including speedo, took it back and they diagnosed it needed a new instrument cluster £4500 Shocked, I asked about the warranty and produced the certificate, they took one look shook their heads at it and said it wasn't signed and therefore not valid Shocked . I wrote to Merc customer service to no avail, their reply was 'if we repair your vehicle under warranty we will set a president and will have to give all our vehicles a lifetime warranty' Shocked
Disillusioned and desperate I tried the hard reset after reading about it on this site, guess what, it cleared and cured the dash problem Shocked Shocked that was the start of many, many problems I had with Mercedes.
The moral is if they are quibbling about warranty before you buy what chance have you got getting a repair done under warranty, walk away, go elsewhere.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I would also point out the difference between the 'select' approved LR warranty and the 'approved' LR warranty.

The latter is like rock solid, the former is like toilet paper.
