Le Shuttle

If you are a twonk like me and get to the Le Shuttle in your D4 and pick the wrong lane to board, yes you can JUST fit under the double decker 'normal car' section (no roof rack), especially when the guy waving us on rolled his eyes and said, " Can you get it any lower mate?". I said it was in 'Access Mode' and he waved me on saying "Give it a go then...". I didn't lose any paint thank goodness. It was squeaky-bum time mind you!
(Pics courtesy of the missus who was squealing thinking we wouldn't fit...)
The last shot is on the way back from Ghent after i'd picked the correct lane!!!!

Ah, Le Shuttle. Much prefer using that to the ferry. I did manage to get in to the "big boys" coaches each time so no squeaky bum moments trying to fit in with the normal cars. Thumbs Up

They absolutely fit in the standard height carriages, I was once taken out of the overheight line by Eurotunnel staff who checked that the D3 was on air, as they were trying to fill up the normal bit of the train.

It feels pretty close but there's room!

Eurotunnel now like to argue the opposite. Hey ho.

I prefer Brittany Ferries, either day crossings to & from Ouistreham, or overnight to St Malo or Le Havre, not forgetting Bilbao & Santander. Thumbs Up

After the hilarious bun-fight taking the car over to the Isle of Wight earlier this year with the peaceful voyage broken by the multitude of car alarms going off all the way across, at least either end of Le Shuttle is a large service station for a cheeky burger/wangy sandwich as opposed to a nuked soft sausage roll on Wightlink. I haven't ferried across to Calais for yonks but 35mins on Le Shuttle is good enough for me.

I've often heard that there's an excellent restaurant service on the Brittany Ferries overnight crossings to Spain.

That's my experience, although sadly not as good today as 10 years ago.

I've done the Spanish crossing probably a dozen times in the last 15 years Thumbs Up

The shorter crossings probably 40 times in the last 15 years - I had a house in Brittany which I visited at least twice a year

Looks idyllic, especially if there’s good fishing in that water.

The Le Shuttle site quotes a maximum height of 1.85m for the double deck carriages, the label for my D4 stuck to the visor gives the height including the sharks fin antenna as being 1.92m
A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Same! But at 'Access mode' it fit with a few cm clearance (and I didn't leave my fin behind). I wish I had gotten out of the car to take a shot but as old matey, who was packing us in the train, waved me forward to about a leg-width to the car in front and likewise to the car behind I think I'd have felt a bit awkward getting out & taking a photo...

Was it Powerful who did a video on getting it down to 1.83m for the ferry? I guess you need to be very careful driving along the train in access mode so that it doesn't rise back up at the critical speed.

I once had a similar issue, taking 7 people to the theatre in my old Defender. Since we were running late, I drove into the multi-storey, then let them all out before finding a parking space... Embarassed

Well at least I know for subsequent visits to pick the right chuffing lane on Le Shuttle! Laughing
Mind you, when we rocked-up at the Marriott in the centre of Ghent, their carpark next to the entrance goes down underground at a 30 degree angle with similar clearance. I didn't take out the fin that time either but when you open your boot once parked-up it hits the ceiling... Oh, and its 40 euros a day to park there too. Rolling Eyes
