Loss of power and stranded with "Engine System Failure&

I'm very upset, all family in car, on hols, driving along dual carriageway, chime and "Engine system Fault" on dash, no power, so down to a very slow crawl.

Luckily managed to limp back to where we were staying and called out LR Assist. Prompt service as usual, he reset Amber Park Brake warning light which had been on lit up a couple of days, then noticed car not instantly recognising gear change on dash (manual car), so then he reprogrammed the X/Y switch to recognise gears. Did a software update, and car was happy again. Smile

Then, back into holiday mode, drove around 20 miles. Parked car for 3 hours. Jumped back in, 5 miles down the road, chime and "Engine System Fault" again. Total loss of power again, so limped to a pub car park.

LR assist not available as it was after 8pm, bank holiday, so car has been taken to local dealership, and we were dropped back at hotel, without car!!

LR Assist promised a hire car for around 10am next morning, we had to be out of our room for 12!!, didn't get a car until after 2pm because enterprise didn't have anything big enough to hand Crying or Very sad

So now I have a crappy VW sharan on the drive until mine gets to the dealers tomorrow Sad
, I will call enterprise to arrange a better D3 replacement until mine is fixed.

Anyone any ideas what could be causing this recurring fault, TFC?, I have checked previous posts but cant find anything specific

Sounds a bit like the Turbo issue I had with mine very early days. They replaced an airflow sensor (I think) and applied some software patches to sort it. Did you try the System Reset sequence with the ignition key? That ALWAYS gave mine a breath of life for a bit longer

Yes steve, reset, but as soon as I revved over 1000rpm, chime and error message, I hope this can be sorted because we are just about to buy a caravan and this could turn into a nightmare

United Kingdom 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

I am experiencing this problem at the moment. The car went in for a routine service and software enhacement mods a while back. When I left the dealer, I drove the car quite hard and got the engine system fault message. The car went back in and a mass air flow sensor fault was diagnosed. The sensor was replaced and I thought that would be the end of it. However, I have had another 7 instances of the same fault. I have got used to pulling over, stopping the engine, and then setting off again. The car is scheduled to go back soon. By the way, The problem only occurs when the engine reaches peak revs. Does my description of the problem match with others? What was the final fix?

Cheers, Alan

Unless the LRA guy drove the vehicle to reset the gear position sensor, the fault would reoccur.
Although 'engine system fault' is shown, the problem is with gear position signals from the gearbox.
The ONLY way to cure this is to drive in reverse until the 'R' is shown on the dash, then drive forward, holding each gear until the gear selected is shown in the instrument panel display, making sure all gears are used sequentially. This applies to both auto & manual variants, obviously auto's need to be in command shift for this procedure once reverse is deselected. If the problem reoccurs a new gear position switch is required

TFC

the LRA guy did exactly that, he run it in the car park in low gear range so that high speeds weren't needed, he did all forward gears then reverse. Fault cleared no problem. He said the amber P sign and the slow gear number appearance pointed to this fault along with the "Engine System Fault" message.

However once he had done the reset etc, all was 100% OK, no amber P and gear number appearance was immediate.

When the fault reoccurred, I wasn't driving hard at all, and also the amber P didn't show, only the"Engine System Fault" message.

As this seemed to stem from going off road on Saturday and getting the amber P sign then, is there a chance I have loosened a connection of some kind?

Cheers

the sequence should be reverse first, the amber 'P' could well be due to a loose gear selector cable or one of the microswitches in the EPB control giving an incorrect signal, either way, the relevant DTC's will have been stored for dealer intervention Wink

Don't admit this to Mrs C - she'll never let you take it off-road ever again. Wink Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Cheers Gareth, the item has been re-listed for £1350, may just get it, hope it has MOT though as I don't fancy trailering it around.

Thumbs Up

A good tip would be to take a real close look at the sills. It has rock sliders fitted and they can hide some real nasty rust. Make sure that they have not welded patch plates to the rock sliders. get soe photos of the boot floor with the carpet lifted. Good luck. The equipment fitted must be worth a fair bit
