My low fuel light comes on when the computer says 16 miles of fuel remaining. Given the number of garages that have closed and the long distances between them in rural areas I think the light should come on earlier.

Julie,
Have you found out whether your fuel warning light comes on or not?

I thought mine was never going to come on when I had the opportunity to test it. (readout said 49 miles, had a 30 mile journey and knew there was plenty of garages along the way in case my bottle went)!

It finally came on 1 mile from home showing 18 miles! Shocked

Rather cleverly, the readout also said that the sat-nav would display fuel station locations. 8)

How much fuel were you able to cram in at that stage, DiscoDad?

I don't know. SWMBO took it to work the next day. I told her it needed a bit in! Laughing

Well the low fuel warning does work as I had it parked on a hill one day and when I got back in it said I had 3 miles left in tank and warning light was on !!! Soon came up once on level to 60 miles left in tank !! Obviuosly set very low, too low in my book. Can it be changed to come on earlier ????

On mine when the warning light comes on when I have 10-12 litres left which is good for 70+km, regardless of what computer says.

I waited for my fuel light come on so i could see what was showing as left in the tank and today it did, which i suppose can vary depending on the computers calculated MPG at the time of the light coming on.

It came on tonight showing 25 miles left in the tank and took 72.55Ltrs to fill to the neck.

The driving distance remaining seems to be a red herring. The fuel light should come on with ~12 litres left, and that would seem to be about what, Pete, you had left in the tank.

If you fill up soon after the light comes on, even if the range is only showing a few miles, and you can only get 70-75 litres into the tank, then you know there is more fuel left than the guage is showing.

I think the guage is very pessimistic, but it is different from the D3 (obviously) and is taking a bit of getting used to. From a full tank, and using LR's own consumption figures, a range of 450 miles on a tankful ought to be achievable. Thus far, I am finding the actual consumption figure to be very poor when compared to the claimed consumption - both D3s were pretty much bang on what LR claimed.

I would agree the fuel consumption is very poor. I had a manual D3 before but with the supposed fuel economy improvments of the D4 I thought an auto would return similar figures to a D3 manual. This is proving not to be the case and so far I do not see where LR get their figures from.

I definitely agree with the poor fuel consumption - I get about 22-24 in normal running and 28 on a run. I know it isn't a huge number in the total cost of the car but it is annoying that it is so far from the official figures. I have a reasonably light right foot and have always got close to the official numbers in my previous cars. The car has only done 2500 miles so maybe it will improve as it runs in.

Ps I have never had the fuel light come on even when I have put 75+ litres in Sad
pps I still does more than my last V8 & I still love it Mr. Green

I can confirm that the low fuel warning comes on for me when there is about 10-12 litres remaining in the tank. That equates to just below the "0" mark on the guage, where it goes into the dark grey bit. Miles remaining, on that basis, is horribly inaccurate, and probably best ignored.

After 4000 miles, my experience on mpg is around 26mpg "around town", up to 32.5mpg doing 50-55 on quiet country roads - and that's with a fairly heavy right foot !

Low fuel wise, I've had two fuel warning lights on, one @ 18 miles left and another at 20 miles to go. Total waste of time bringing it on at that late stage.

Sacrifice in the name of science: I have run the tank low twice just to see what happens and the warning came on with 28 and 30 miles remaining. The first time it stayed on until I filled it but this morning it came on at 30mi then went off at 23 mi, back on at 22, off at 21 and back on at 16 miles remaining until I filled up at 9 miles. Each time it went off the grey text on the dash, the yellow lamps and the petrol stations on the GPS all disappeared, and I touched nothing like the ok button which might have prompted such behaviour. Odd!

I also note that if I assume 86litres is full to the top, then I had 15 and 12 litres left in the tank when I filled with the remaining distances at 25 and 9 miles respectively. Makes no sense. Rolling Eyes

As I said above, the miles remaining is clearly a red herring, and hugely unreliable. It is on the D3 as well. The D3 gauge also lights the low fuel light and then goes off again, and the real testimony is gauge level, which you just have to get to know. What seems to be clear is that the light does come on at about the tank level.

Now, and I cannot find it anywhere, but I recall reading somewhere that the range/fuel remaining calculation was something that took time to settle down, and is based upon longer averages than one might think. I am untroubled by this little quirk, comfortable in the knowledge that when the light finally decides to come and and stay on, there is still enough fuel in the tank to get me another 40 miles or so.

I have a D4 HSE, same problem with the fuel light not coming on until very late but it's a recent development. It used to come on with 40 miles range or so, now only at 12-14miles range, but it's only taking 75 litres or there abouts so should have teh best part of 40 miles left.

The fuel economy is a good 30% down on claimed figures though. I've done a couple of very painful brim tests on 300 mile motorway runs at 60-65mph. Computer claims it's doing 31mpg but calculating it at the pump proves it's only doing 27mpg at absolute best. I'm pretty annoyed about this as I've done a bit over 6k miles now which should have been nigh on 8k miles for the fuel I've bought - in otherwords it's cost me about £400 more in fuel than it should have done. One of the key reasons to go for a new D4 was getting 31mpg on an average cycle, which I'm finding is actually 23-24mpg in real world.
