Multiple Error Messages, after engine stalled, no fwd drive

Hi,

Was out yesterday, car was fine, started up, and set off out of the car park where I was, just about to exit, and the engine stalled; started the engine straight away, and the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree!

All the usual ones, HDC fault, Transmission fault, parking brake fault, suspension lowered, but also had restricted gears this time.

Had this sort of combo before and a new brake light switch and genuine bulbs fitted, cured it, and the car has been fine for months. Main issue was that the car wouldn't even crawl forwards, but would happily drive in reverse (more by luck than design, I could reverse back to a part of the car park where I wasn't causing annoyance to the other good people using it).

Got the code reader out, and cleared the codes; first attempt cleared them, then came back as soon as started. Did them all again; codes cleared, car fired up, and not a glitch out of the car park and back home!

I have a spare brake light switch, could it be that again? Or is this a completely different issue; it was the lack of forward drive that was the concerning issue, as the good lady isn't keen on driving it, in case it happens again. I was going to leave the spare brake light switch in it's wrapping until I suspected that was an issue again.

Is that the car stalled a factor in this (it's an automatic, so not my poor clutch control)? And what makes a car stall when it was running fine for the minute before it did?

Arrrrghhhhh!!! It's a good job I like Land Rovers!!!

Paul

It's worth checking your battery condition and make sure the it is charging up correctly. These cars hate low batteries.

Hi, I was being a bit tardy as had the good lady in the car with me, so just pressed 'quick clear' on the diagnostic tool, didn't actually ready them

Hi,

As someone who was once zapped by a Series IIa (usual someone had replaced a fuse with a bit of 6" nail), I'm always wary of car batteries, is it easier to get Halfords to check? Or is it easy to test the battery?

Thanks,

Paul

If your not confident checking your battery, I am sure Halfords or any local battery specialist will check the battery for you.

What code reader are you using?

Stall might suggest something shorted out or perhaps if battery is poor something died and briefly drew a large current.

Check starter motor cable hasn't rubbed on anything and all electrics work.

United Kingdom

as a simple GUIDE to battery condition i purchased a voltmeter/USB socket that plugs into an accessories socket in the cab. Shows the battery voltage as soon as the car is woken up on unlocking.
With mine in place i can see the battery voltage with ignition off (c.12.5v), the voltage on cranking (sub 12v) and the voltage when running (c.14.8v)
This shows my battery and alternator are both functioning ok.

whilst this is most definitely NOT a true accurate voltage reading it does give a very good indication and only cost about £7 off Amazon.

Hi,

It's a Maxi link one, pretty good, though I generally just use it to clear faults, it's a bit slow to use for diagnostics proper, but you can see open and closed circuits such as brake light switch.

Kind Regards,

Paul

Looks like my next purchase, if it's easier than being under the bonnet 👍
