Morning everyone
Wife was driving the disco home yesterday and the red battery light came on, went off, came on a few times.
Got it home without bother (11 miles) and I checked the battery voltage at idle, 13.7v and then engine off 12.8v, so alternator doing something.
Presume alternator on way out - would you suggest just replace it now before going anywhere else?
It is our sole vehicle at the moment so need it to be reliable!
Anything else to check before I stump up the £200-300 for a new one?
Also, is the viscous fan normal or reverse thread ?
Cheers
Will.

Definitely check the earth. I had issues a few years back with the battery ending up dead. Changed alternator and still had issues, then I thought battery may be broken after going flat so often so changed that but still issues. Following suggestion on the forum ended up adding a new earth between the engine and chassis and that resolved everything. Also an earth is cheaper to try first than a new alternator

if you need an alternator make sure its a Denso just under £200 from Land Rover Direct.
I just replaced mine yesterday it looks a real pain to do but is really easy, I followed the video in the thread below but didn't need to work from underneath its all done from the top.

Thanks, that looks quite straight forward. I have ordered a 36mm fan spanner, any tips on removing the fan??

Earths all checked ok, fuses ok.
Alternator now on the bench awaiting the new one to go in !
Managed to get the fan off ok (car had cambelt and oil pump 3k miles ago).
Managed to get my local LR dealer to get an LR recon one in for me for 8.30 tomorrow morning and it’s only a short bus ride away to collect.
Jobs a good’un.
