New injectors and tested HPFP but not starting. |
|
Hello, Long story but I had my oil pump casting fail on my 2.7TDV6 a couple of years ago. Thankfully no bottom end damage just the cylinder heads were and these were reconditioned. Got the car running did have the odd miss and was very hard in starting but it did run. After a few hours of running the rear cam seal burst and I spat the dummy out and put it in the back of the shed and forgot about it. Year later I'm back at it. Replaced the rear cam seal and while the HPFP belt was off I took the HPFP out to be tested along with the injectors. Pump came back with a fuel bill of health but all 6 injectors were under performing so new ones were ordered. Fitted the new parts and got to the stage of turning the Key. Primed the Low pressure side of the fuel until a good constant stream was coming out then cranked the car over. The car kept cranking over and over with no offer of starting. Cracked each fitting on the rail to check if fuel was getting through and it was. Looked at the live data. Pressure at the HPFP is 540bar at 180rpm, there is no stored fault codes which I thought was strange. When cracking the car over the no smoke what so over coming from the exhaust. When the car was rebuild previously I had a lot of white smoke from the exhaust before she caught but this time there's nothing. Its like the injectors aren't been told to open. Really stumped on this and not having any faults code to go from I have no idea where to go next. checked the connection the the cam position senor, tired another key as I've read that that may immobilise the car, Not been anywhere near the crank position sensor so that should still be ok and I am getting feed back on live data from it. I did try and whiff of easy start and it still didn't offer. Any ideals will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

I had something simular where the butterfly valve in the air intake had stuck shut. Its easy to check just remove the air pipe from the air filter box and put your hand over the pipe when cranking and see if its sucking in air. Andrew

Surely if the butterfly was stuck shut he'd still be getting clouds of unburnt diesel out the exhaust?
Or does the flap have position feedback that stops fuelling?
Given the history I would be looking at timing personally

With no air getting in no air will be going out the exhaust to push the smoke out. Andrew

Try a fuel lift pump reset with a IID tool.

they aren't easy cars to start after rebuild
probably air in fuel system.
after long cranking the injectors get shut down anyway. So stop after 10-15 seconds

Hi Guys,
Only had a chance today to have another bash. Butterfly just before intake manifolds/rocker covers was open. Carried out a lift pump reset on the GAP and spent two full batteries cranking it over in 15 second intervals but still no joy. I think I’ll have another look at the timing but everything was locked up with the pins while the belt was off. Can anyone confirm that there is only one locking hole on the flex plate? I’ve had a look online and people are saying it can lock in balancing holes also?
Again thanks for your replies.
Cheers

Cranking speed of 180 RPM seems a bit on the low side to me.
But I can't say off hand what it should be 1994 Defender 300tdi 110 commercial

I would probably be
Removing 1 injector.
Connect it upto the pipes again and cranking to see if fuel coming out.
It’s high pressure though, so be careful.
Have it spray into a glass bottle/jar.
If you see fuel, you may even getting running on 5 cylinders briefly
Shut it off before the exhaust gets hot and you have a fire risk
