Truly the ugliest Land Rover built yet by a country mile. I would have happily swapped mine last year when it was 3 years old if the 5 was different. I'm in limbo now not knowing what to change for. The advantage of buying rather than renting cars I guess means it costs me nothing whilst I decide.

Unless your D4 is appreciating in value, you’re losing money every day.

I was in limbo for ages as well. Making a list of what I wanted from a replacement and then prioritising it lead me to a used FFRR, but even that had to be a specific year (MY17), engine and spec.
and of course it’s not as practical and versatile as the D4.

All new vehicles depreciate, that's a given but not paying out each month for pcp, loan interest or rental payments makes a huge difference.

I’d rather have my £50k odd invested and more liquid. More importantly, especially with diesel, I like having the two backstops of an agreed final value and the voluntary termination facility. 👍

I could understand the D5 better if LR had intended to make a more direct replacement D3/4 in the Defender range.

What I find strange is how “Defender like” the new Defender is. It’s such a shame the Land Rover weren’t able to work a similar trick with the Disco 4 and generate a Disco 5.

The L462 could have then fulfilled its natural role as a Disco Sport “Max” or Disco Sport “Plus” and everyone would have been happy Thumbs Up

Its is funny that the only negative comments about the D5 are seen on here. Folks I work with or have seen/been in mine have all said its so much nicer than the boxy D4 both inside and out (and I have even asked what they thought about the rear end - all have said its looks good including one of my colleagues who is considering changing his BMW 420 for one) - as has been pointed out, everyone has their own PoV, but outside of the forum, they are pretty much all positive Thumbs Up

I’ve still got the D5, colleagues, friends and family either comment negatively about its looks or say nothing. I’ve yet to hear any compliments though.

The Sd6 really is a great performer. I’d say it was more appropriate to compare it with the SDV8 than the previous TD6 that was in earlier D5’s.

I also think that some work has been done on improving NVH as well. Even though the 285/40/22 tyres do their best to wreck it, I’m sure this D5 seems more refined and quiet. I’d like to see what it was like on 19” or 20” rims.

I’ve always said that there’s much I like about the D5. Sadly there’s too much I don’t like about it.

At least now I can add the engine to the list of positives. Although I’m not sure I’d want to own the Sd6 outside of the full warranty. Time will tell on that one.

I think LT has always said that it was specific issues that turned him away from the D5 as a replacement for the D4 (edit: I see he beat to it Laughing ). Split tailgate and the hitting of the head on the A-pillar were two points often mentioned ISTR. Oh, and the ugly rear end design, of course.

The engine is the one that the RRS has had for some time now. The extra 50 horses over the older 3.0 diesel in the D4 is always going to make an impression.

The one thing that I still struggle to get my head around is where LR think the D5 sits in the range. Other than 7 seats, it doesn't really bring much over the RRS or the FFRR, especially once specced up and it reaches RRS prices. If one doesn't need the extra 2 seats, the RRS seems to be a better option for many. Perhaps, that's why the RRS is LR's best seller these days? I wonder if that will make LR consider what to do with the D5 to increase its popularity. I think the answer is obvious - the price is too high for a 7-seater in a market that is awash with 7-seaters at a price more acceptable to families. Will LR drop the price? You wouldn't bet on it, would you?

What did D3 and D4 bring over the RRS and FFRR, just 7 seats, but isn’t that the point for a family car? Be able to carry anything, tow anything and go anywhere in comfort. The D5 still does this and probably better than any other car out there too.

whilst obviously being happy with my chioce in going for the D5, I do agree that pricing is silly compared with what it was for the D4, and now even the new Defner is the same - I spec'd up a defender to the same as my D5 HSE and it was pretty much the same, so whilst I do like the look of the new defender, would I go for one - not sure I would at the price.

I’d argue that the D3/4 was more comfortable than the RRS/ D5 for multiple occupants, especially those in the middle row.

There’s no doubt that the D3/4 was better at carrying objects than the RRS/D5.

As for towing. I can’t meaningfully comment as I’ve never towed in any Land Rover other than the D3/4 and ancient Defenders.

I do know that I liked the massive weight of the D3/4 when I was towing though. I felt very secure.

I’ve often said that the Tonka Toy styling was the USP for the D3/4.

Isn't that exactly what I've said, Discoveries are offroad people and load luggers. If you want performance buy a RRS and if you want ultimate luxury buy a Full Fat, that is true now and true right back to the launch of the RRS. Prices have changed yes, but relative to each other I'm not so sure except for Defender which seems to be the only car that has changed target groups.
