OT - (rooftop) tents

Preparing for trip to Kgadigadi - everything in place Thumbs Up except for sleeping arrangements Big Cry

After our experience on a previous visit to Botswana with lions, hyenes roaming around our ground tents the missus now insists that everyone sleeps in rooftop tents (or inside D3 - although very roomy I think 5 people will be a bit of a stretch !)

I will be taking off-road trailer and roof-rack, so will be able to fit roof-tops, but will then sacrifice precious packing space as I will have to dedicate trailer roof and roof-rack to the tents as we need one 2 sleeper and one 3 sleeper.

I am also not interested in investing in more tents and/or trailer so would want perhaps hire two roof-tops for the trip.

Anyone know of companies that will hire roof-tops only - the couple of places I contacted only interested in fully rigged trailers/caravans.

What ground tents do you have . I've happily slept in Bots and Zim with lions , hyenas and even the odd leopard visiting us during the night. The only issue I had was once when I used a nylon tent instead of my normal canvas one . I was woken up by the bone breath of the hyena that was sniffing me through the tent Shocked

I only have nylon tents, although I like the canvas, but due to space and weight (and cost) decided to go for nylon.

The story of the woman attacked recently by hyena stated that she was bitten right through the nylon tent they were sleeping in - well needless to say that clinched it for the missus !

Deon try Ngonyama at

I think they stock Echo and Outback rooftops.
If you don't come right with them let me know, I will try to organize something.

There you have it then . I have never felt unsafe in the canvas tent - as long as it is closed. I got up one night and as I unzipped the door 3 hyenas ran away - wouldn't even have know they were there otherwise . Laughing
