Power Steering Bleeding - Am I doing it right?

I swapped my rack today and with everything back together, I topped up the reservoir and began turning wheel from lock to lock.

After perhaps 30 turns, there were no more bubbles, but I knew there must be more.

This is where I might have Censored up. I turned the engine, literally a flick of the key and the reservoir was emptied. Cool, I thought, and began turning lock to lock once more.

3 hours later I am still turning the wheel with a seemingly endless supply of bubbles in my vision. It's almost as if it's getting in somewhere at this point.

I can hear air squelching in the pipes at the end of each turn. Bubbles are coming out but when left to settle, the bottle isn't going down any more.

My thought is perhaps the two pipes-into-rack ring seals are letting air in (no leaking). I didn't replace them unfortunately but it was a very clean tight fit when putting them back in rack

Cheers

I'm sure you need to run the engine to bleed the air out. Just keep the reservoir topped up and turn lock to lock, engine running.

Its likely air was drawn in when the reservoir suddenly emptied.

Fill the reservoir to the correct mark the run the engine briefly, switch off and top up the level and repeat until no more fluid is being drawn in.

Now run the engine but don't turn the steering for a few minutes. Then you can start short turns to expell any air but stop if it starts to froth and let it settle.

Cheers guys

I didn't have running the whole time no, I figured while there was still air coming out without it running, there was no need. Seems like I'm getting there now. Thanks for the help. Least my arms got a workout today if nothing else achieved...

Rolling with laughter Reminds me of the days when there was no such thing as power steering unless you had top of the range.

You did have the biceps though.

I'm of a generation that's been blessed with power steering all its life, even my mower has power steering... The closest I've come to not having it is driving a Defender Laughing
