Rear CrossMember Rusted 2012 D4

Hi Guys,

So im looking to purchase another D4, I have found a 2012 model which seems to of had a lot of the work done however I have a concern with regards to the rear crossmember being rusted around the tow bar electrics which is causing me some concerns.

Is this particularly expensive and difficult part to replace?

I will be towing my pride and joy behind it so would want it to be safe!!

Hello,

I am no expert. However, I know that particular area is prone to rust. Would you be able to post a some pictures of the rust? This would make it easier to see how bad it is.

I have rust in the same area. So I have cleaned it up and treated with Lanoguard. Looks good as new(ish).
 Craig.

Having taken on a very rusty v8 project recently i can say they are really solid chassis wise. The chassis is very thick, and if all you have is surface rust it can easily be cleaned up and protected from getting any worse.

Has it been owned by a boat / jetski owner ?

Salt water getting in the chassis isn't great BUT having said that it took my 300tdi best part of 16 years of my ownership to rust away after 4 years of being a jetski hauler for previous owner.

Before and after. I live on the north coast of Scotland and my truck spends its life traveling around the coast of the NC500. It is therefore constantly exposed to sea air. This year I sand blasted the rough looking rear chassis (including removal of the rear bumper cover) and found the chassis itself is in fine condition under the surface corrosion. I have now painted it with Jotun 87 which is a surface coating used in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Sorted.
