Reasonable hours / cost for body off job?

What would you say is a reasonable time or price for body off a D3 /D4 / RRS? As a customer or garage.

The achievements of some determined and resourceful owners show that most awkward units can be replaced without body removal, even turbo or COP.

Conversely, in a workshop specifically geared to body off work, operating at semi-retirement pace, I would take a body off for replacement of gearbox, upper rear suspension arms, turbo etc.

On older models and ones with high mileage there is often a combination of jobs, which make this approach justified. Also, the overall cost may be significantly reduced, as compared with several separate jobs in a garage.

5 hours off maybe a bit less if rust hasn't bit it, longer if it has. Smile

I can confirm what Profsr G says..

Did mine in about 4 1/2 H, no rust.

Although i did research beforehand to do an engine replacement with body on, it is for all the reasons motorworks mentions, a no brainer to do jobs mentioned, with body off….

You need access two post lift though…. And…. You need it for a few days… in the end….
 Best regards
Harold

Hi all. Sorry to resurrect an old thread...

The times suggested above; are they just for the removal or do they also include refitting? I'm told my crossover pipe is likely split (smell of exhaust fumes and the garage says the outer is swollen). This is an independent LR specialist and they're suggesting it would be approx £1800 just to remove and refit the body. Plus the cost of the pipe, of course!

I'm trying not to cry into my phone... Big Cry

Cheers,
Ade

Can't possibly be that much Ade, otherwise people would be shelling out nearly £2k every time they got timing belts done and other bits and pieces... AFAIK it's more like £500-800 for that job.

Sounds to me like they don't want the work, are trying to rip you off, or don't understand the work required (unlikely if they're a specialist!).

Try and get a quote from someone else?

you don't need to get a body off for timing belts... Cool

body off can be rather "quick"(half a day), but it needs to get on again (slower) and the initial work done..
expect at least 1,5 days work at least.. that is if there are no setbacks or what so ever...

do not know the hour rate in the UK but you can do the math your self

If a garage is quoting £1800 for body off and refit, and the normal labour time required is 12 hours, their hourly rate is about £150. If that includes VAT then £125/hour plus tax.
If their hourly rate is £72, labour time would be 25 hours.

Some jobs have a high labour element, in comparison to cost of parts. A 2.7L crossover pipe is currently £610 inc. VAT from Advanced Factors.

I could supply and fit a used 3.0L XF engine to a Disco 4, with labour less than above.

In my opinion, and with the experience of having done the job more times that I can remember, I would say 5 hours is plenty of time to do a body of AND back on.

I do wonder though why they want the body off for a crossover pipe replacement.

Thanks all. I'm trying to get a couple of other quotes for comparison. The garage is one I've used for years so I trust them; I just suspect their prices may have risen a lot recently. They're saying it will likely take a couple of days to remove and refit the body, which comes to over £1400 plus VAT. Then the cost of the pipe on top, of course.

The belts were done about 12K miles ago, so probably not worth doing again but it's it worth replacing the EGR valve(s?) while the body is off? How frequently do they fail?

They've said turbos are also easy to replace but I'm not doing that at over £1K each!

EGR valves will also depend on the mileage of your mount.. as are the turbo’s..

Not necessary BUT a new HPFP belt, is soooooooo much easyer when the body is off and not expensive…

I thought it was do-able with body on until one of the bolts seizes/snaps then you need body off to get access to sort that. Am I wrong?
