Restricted Performance - miles from home

I knew this trip was going too smoothly. Currently on Barra in the Outer Hebrides, and had the dreaded Restricted Performance message today. Reset it a couple of times and the third time a check engine light came on and stayed on. I don’t have a diagnostic tool.

No unusual noises from the car, all fluid levels look fine. Performance is normal until the message comes up, then quite restricted to the point that I would not want to be on a motorway.

However, I need to get it home to Teesside on Saturday, with a full load of family and gear. Needless to say, this is all making me a bit twitchy.

Thoughts from the collective?

Find a specialist in Oban or Glasgow that by some miracle might be able to look at it on Saturday afternoon?

Or maybe a kind member with an IID tool that could scan it and at least let us determine if it is minor or in need of immediate repair before going any further?

Either way, it’s parked until Sat now, but it’s going to be on my mind for the rest of the holiday. 🙁

A cheap code reader in the glove box is a must. Once you get home, order an Autel code reader and at least you can reset and clear things to get you home.

Hopefully a member local to you can pop across and read your codes for you Smile

I bet its the inlet manifold. Common problem on the D4.

If you switch off and then on again it will reset. If you don't welly it but drive carefully with a light throttle you can make steady progress. I know this from experience - twice! Big Cry

Yes, it was advertised with an IID tool. When I collected the car, this was replaced with an Autel (I didn’t realise till I was home). That Autel is locked to the previous owners email, and presumably he’s still ‘looking’ for the IID. 🙄

A situation I should have sorted before the trip, but failed to, obviously.

Ouch. Yes, Reading seems to be pointing to the manifold, but it also seems a pretty generic error for lots of things. Won’t know till I get a diagnosis I suppose.

Just not enjoying the prospect of having to baby it all the way home. It’s a Censored of a trip as it is.

Worth checking the hose on the left hand side of the intercooler, it can split and gives the same or very similar problem.

If it is split some superglue and gaffer tape or electrical tape will seal it till you get home. If the manifold has gone you might be able to find the split and seal it temporarily the same way
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

Ferry gets into Oban 12:30 on Saturday. Then making our way down past Loch Lomond to head past Glasgow and south on the M74.

I’ll spend a bit of time tomorrow having a closer look at hoses various and the engine. If it doesn’t mess with your Saturday afternoon plans, I would appreciate a quick diagnostic check, just so I know what to expect when I take it to my local specialist next week.

My betting is it'll show MAF sensor issues. Advice will be to clean them or swap them around to see if one has failed. The only way you'll accurately know if its the inlet manifold is a smoke test. Most garages can do this if you're near one.

If you pull the engine cover off, is there any oil mist settled anywhere? That is a clue to a split manifold.

I towed a caravan back from Cornwall to Manchester with a split manifold in my old D4. Stuck to 45, and most of the time it was ok. Hills were a challenge. Did have to reset a few times. Took a while to get home.

We had an iid tool plugged in and my wife had the phone on her and did a running clear of faults as we drove. Works to a certain extent, but pulling a caravan up a long hill it would fault again immediately. It was ok on the level.

Even if you have a loose battery terminal connection, that’s enough to set it off.
So, a very small point, but worth an easy check.
 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

No loose connections.
No oil mist.
No obvious split hoses.

Now happens as soon as the engine is up to temp.

Autel arrives tomorrow in theory, so hopefully I can get a clue before we have to leave at 6am on Sat. 😟
