Hi how are you? Have you solved the problem? Replaced HPFP?

I had to register here, as I too am struggling with P117D.
My 07 has had both egr’s blanked and coded. But it went into limp when under load, and sometimes when rolling downhill. P0087 low fuel rail pressure was the code.
So I measured pressure on the schrader-valve; 2.5psi when idling.
Changed the fuel filter to a Mahle-filter; 3psi at the valve.
Changed the LPFP pump only, with an ebay-unit; 3psi at the valve, p0087 error.
Changed the HPFP with a recon unit from Island4x4; same p0087 error.
Changed the complete LPFP-unit from LRdirect; still 3psi at the valve, but now the code is p117d.

Car starts easily, and runs great until it gets some load, then ‘ding’ and limp.
Alternator runs at 14.4V, battery seems fine. All my brakebulbs are fine and working as they should.
How important are those 6-7psi at the schrader? And what can the problem be now?

Excellent guide, it just lacks the; I’ve replaced the filter and the pump, but still no increase in pressure part. Smile

Edit;
Still p0087 error when the engine gets warm.

Hi

Hope u don’t mind me saying but could a Faulty fuel pressure sensor or even the fuel temperature sensor cause these kind of issues or have u already ruled it out via live data

Fingers crossed u get it resolved and know there are some extremely knowledgeable members here that will be able to guide u a lot better than myself

Also found this , ref blowing out the lines

Hi Stuart!

At this point, I'm happy for ANY feedback. Smile
Fuel-temp sensor is new, I broke the old one while changing the HPFP. Made no difference.
Have not changed the pressure sensor on the rail, but it seems to be working (live data).

My old HPFP never went past 110k kpa, the new one sees 140k before limp.

Will try to bypass the fuel filter and filterhousing today, see if it makes any difference. Will also try to blow the lines.

Hi

Ur so welcome and many thks for the replies, fingers crossed one of the suggestions may work

Indeed understand some faults can be very frustrating trying to pin them down , that’s great you’ve got some live data readings as at least ur be able to compare them

Plse let us know how u get on, fingers crossed Thumbs Up

Well, easier said then done to bypass the filter and the cooler. Usually on cars I’ve had, you have one supply-pipe from the fueltank, and you have one return-pipe.
Here you have one supply-pipe, that splits just before the filter and have a loop through a cooler? So putting a hose between the HPFP and the fuel filter won’t work? I’m assuming diesel will flow everywhere because of the loop. The usage of plastic connectors also makes it hard to just plug one. The return-pipe have the same design, also connected to the cooler-loop.
The 8mm fuel hose I bought, fits nicely on the HPFP but will of course not fit on the connector on the top of the fuel tank. I’m thinking that LR have made this unnessesery hard to work on.

Could it be that too much diesel flows through the cooler-loop instead of going to the HPFP?
I blew air through the pipe from the filter to the schradervalve; no clogging there.

Edit;
I’ve now been reading the whole thread again, with more understanding than the first time. I see many have the samme codes and the same symptoms as me, and I think I will try to change the returnline from the filter to the tank, and the fuel filter bracket. I get 5-6psi on the schrader when priming, but it drops as soon as the engine starts.

Nastorg on page 9 had very similar issues to mine. He bought a new fuel line (wfp500570) that fixed his issue. I’ve changed that as well, but did not make any difference.
I measure the amp drawn by the pump to 2.7A on ignition, 3.0-3.1 on tickover. Fuelpressure still at 3psi on the schrader.

I have 14.2V both on the battery and at the pump-connector. I’m struggling now. Sad

Did some more measuring today;
Connected the pump directly to the battery to eliminate any electrical errors in the car, still pulling 2.7A and delivering 3-4psi at the schrader.
I then measured the pressure on the outlet from the tank; 6.5psi
I was in shock over this, but messured then the pressure out of the filter; 6.5psi
But as soon as I connect the return-hose to the tank, the pressure drops from 6.5 to 4psi.

I then put a clamp on the returnline to the tank, and for the first time I got 6.5psi on the schrader!
But I need to have a returnline, so I can’t drive with it like that. Anyone else experienced the same?

Well, after 1.000 KM done, it seems that HPFP was the issue. Replaced with a brand new VDO. Thanks mates

New to the group, hi,

@robbie I have an issue with my 16 plate d4. Tested fuel pressure at 7.5psi and amp draw at 10 when gauge is on. Holding steady.

New fuel filter fitted.

Drained the tank and put fresh fuel in.

Will not start. Do you have a follow on from your first thread? Next step to diagnose the possible issue. I’m guessing logical place will be to change sensors in fuel rail before putting a new HP pump on.

Thanks.

Have you checked that the HPFP is running? Is the belt ok and not broken?
Have you tried to read the fuel pressure with diagnostics?

Haven’t tested the pressure on the hpfp as don’t have kit for this. The car doesn’t run at all. Doesn’t even try to fire. Have tested all the low pressure side, pump amp draw 10a. 7.5psi at Schrader valve. Emptied the tank of all fuel and put new in.

Next step? Sensors?

What is the method to test hpfp?

Thanks
Rob

If you don’t have diagnostics, you can unlatch the plastic cover on the rear belt and inspect visually that the belt isn’t broken/snapped.

Will do that, hoping it’s the belt or sensor, if it’s the pump that seems to be a pain to change.
