is this rust on a plastic section of my D4?

What's happening here, does anyone know?

This is the upper section of my tailgate on my 2014 D4.

It looks like rust starting to blow out through the paintwork.

I thought this part of the tailgate was plastic/composite, it certainly isn't magnetic...

It is now spreading fast..

TIA for any pointers...

They are aluminium rather than plastic, so it is aluminium corrosion

Mine is not showing corrosion or I would be looking at changing it oxidising aluminium can be difficult to stop coming back,

Plenty of performance vehicles use aluminium panels so any decent body shop should know how to deal with it. Unlike rust you cannot stabilise aluminium corrosion so it must be removed completely before filling, priming and finishing.

Correct. The entire panel will need to be refinished. It doesn’t need to be replaced.
I have had repairs for this situation completed and after 5 years, no issues.
