Stupid questions from a newby!

Ok, so I've had the D3 for nearly two weeks...so far so good. But there are a few things I can't work out.

Firstly, when I turn on the ignition I get a beep after 20 seconds. Why? No fault codes associated with this on the GAP Tool, nothing appearing on the info screen. Happens whether I move off or sit still - it's not related to the timing of the automatic door locking. Rear parking sensors are a bit iffy, but it is a short beep rather than a long beep on start-up, and it happens in Park and Drive rather than just reverse. I'm sure there is a simple answer but I've not yet found it!

Secondly, do all models have the passenger side cup-holder? I can't get the spring-release mechanism to work and have managed to pull the trim cover off by mistake. So is it possible there simply isn't a cup holder on my trim level? There is no model designation on the rear, so I am assuming base-level (2005). It's this bit here:

And then what is below the steering wheel? Is this a trim panel or a compartment? Is there anything under there that I am going to need to access at any time? There was a handle, which I tried to pull, but it came away in my hand.

Finally (for now!), I added the vehicle particulars to my profile, but don't seem to be able to get that to actually show below my details on the left here. Is there a trick to this?

All simple stuff and I'm sure I will kick myself when I find the answers! Smile

Not sure about the beep, but mine is a 7 seater base model, and didn’t have the pass side cup holder. I did fit one years ago. The thing under the steering wheel should be an air vent. Thumbs Up

DN, thanks. Yours must be very similar to mine, so I guess I can rule out operator error in trying to access the passenger-side cup holder! But sounds like yours doesn't beep...which suggests that mine might be trying to tell me something!

Yes I've had enough Land Rover experience to realise that new air vents can appear when least expected and in the most unlikely places, often along with new water sources!

Think you've already made the best investment which is the GAP IID Very Happy Have a look in settings and select "pending codes" and it will bring up a few more (like that's a good thing Laughing )

Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun and keep asking the questions (search function on the site is also excellent as there's not much that hasn't been asked before Laughing )
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Worms.

There are no such things as stupid questions just stupid answers. As regards the cup holder had my d3 for about 10years before I knew that it had a cup holder. Discovered (if that’s the right terminology) by my grand son fiddling with knobs and buttons as they do. Push in to release now used by SWMBO to house her G&T’s on long journeys. Next usage tomorrow as we will be on our way to Welch Wales Manorbier actually. Welcome to the mad house of all that is LR.

Nige, thanks, I've made extensive use of the search function (don't think I've read anything other than this site over the last two weeks!) but couldn't find these particular questions.

Just checked and there is nothing showing on the Pending Codes! I'm keeping a fairly compulsive eye on the codes at the moment to try and work out which are real. I still have a feeling that there was probably a good (and expensive) reason why this car was sold, but I've yet to find it!

I got the GAP Tool when I got the Freelander 2, six years ago and wouldn't be without it! Only needed to buy the extra licence to get the D3 onto it. Just getting the clock to appear on the dash was worth the GAP Tool Licence!

John, good call - I'll have my grand-daughter in the car at the weekend, so I'll let her loose on the interior!

I really don't think I have the passenger cup-holder in my spec, but a bottle of Memsahib's favourite Harris Gin fits in the bottle-holder in the passenger door pocket, so I think she'll survive!

Worms, mine does more of a single bong, than a beep (usually after starting it), so less than 20 seconds. It has done it from new, and I had wondered why, as you say. I don’t think it has anything to do with oil pressure or anything terminal, as the oil pressure light goes out quite quickly on start up. No fault codes to do with it, no messages, and it has done nearly 100k miles now, so I don’t tend to worry about it. I vaguely remember other owners wondering about this, back in 2006, so maybe just the early D3’s did this. It seems to coincide with the restraint / airbag system light going off on the dash, so about 7 seconds after turning ign on, on mine.

My D3. Is an 07 plate. Only time I get a bleep is if I have the key in the ignition with the ignition not turned on and a door open . Close the door and it stops or turn the ignition on!

Worms as an aside found that there was a tray of some sort at the bottom of the central consul you could pull out when in the rear seats. Also found not surprisingly by the grand son.maybe something else to look for. Strangely enough I have an XS spec which came with heated front seats and cruise control. Specs don’t seem to mean much with D3’s!

I saw an old thread suggesting it may be failure to find a phone... But if I press the phone button on the radio, it says no phone fitted, so I presume it is not spending 20 seconds looking for one every time I start up? That 20 seconds could also be around the time it decides whether or not to fire-up the Webasto, but again I'm sure it doesn't tell you every time that it is not doing it!

John, thanks again. I had already found the rear cup-holder, which is partly why I thought that the passenger one might also be present! Of course, sales specs are often over-ridden by customer orders, so like yours, mine has the cold pack (heated seats all round, heated screenwash & heated windscreen). I've also got the cruise control, but had assumed that was standard?

My build spec sheet says:

Quote:
Cup Holders Row 1 - Cup Holders (2) Row 1 [088CC]
Cup Holders Row 2 - Cup Holders (2) Row 2 [088CE]
Cup Holders Row 3 - Cup Holders (2) Row 3 [088CG]

So that looks like 2 per row, where I guess the additional front passenger one would make it 3?

But then, the build spec also says:

Quote:
Engine - Lion diesel 2.7 V6 (140 kW)
Engine Tune - Diesel Engine Tune Europe [075CO]
Fuel Type/Rating - Lead free petrol [103AH]

So I'm not sure it is wholly trustworthy! Smile

Martin, Thanks!

I'm on a Linux system and that often means things don't quite work first time!

...perhaps Linux and Land Rover have something in common! Smile
