Surging with rumbling noises

In the last couple of days, my '57 D3 HSE has developed some odd symptoms...

At around 50mph, it surges very slightly, maybe only up and down around 100 revs/min and only when under load, usually when going uphill, but not when accelerating hard. It does it with cruise control on and in fifth gear in manual. If I go to sixth gear the car starts to rumble/vibrate and this is usually at 1,400 revs - It kind of feels like a wheel bearing is going but it's hard to place where the noise it's coming from, but it's not a wheel bearing. In fourth there's no problem really. It's only around 50mph. The only other thing is that there is a fairly constant but not too noticeable whine but that seems to be linked to the speed of the car and not what gear the car is in.

I'm guessing this is a gearbox issue, or maybe something else? Is there anything simple I can do to try and resolve it before heading to the garage? Reset the gearbox maybe (I don't know how to do this!)?

Also, if I'm going downhill with my foot off the accelerator with it in gear, there's a kind of droning noise. It goes away immediately if I touch the accelerator of if the car is in neutral. I have a suspicion that this is a differential and probably not related to the above? Again, anything simple I can check for that?

I have an IID and the only code is low fuel pressure which is intermittent - I've been told by the garage that this is the high pressure fuel pump on its way out but not replaced it yet as it doesn't cause any problems really - thinking of doing it next month though. I'm guessing that this isn't related? No other codes at all.

Gearbox was flushed 18 months ago, new fuel rails about six months ago. EGRs are blanked but car not remapped for it. No issues starting, no loss of power, etc.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds typical of the torque converter on its way out. A trip to Bristol Transmissions or such like would be advisable, see what they say. Likely to cost a fair bit to fix. Thumbs Up What mileage has the vehicle done? Some peeps have tried adding ‘Dr Tranny ‘ additive to the gearbox oil, this has been known to improve things for a while ( I have no experience of this though). One thing to bear in mind, is if left ‘chattering’ like this for long, it will cause damage to the auto g/ box too. Rolling Eyes As you say, the other problem ( droning) probably not related to the above.

It's on 170k miles. Service history says that it had a new torque converter at around 80k miles, replaced by Land Rover dealer. I'm going to the local LR specialist next week so will what they think and how much to replace if it is that.

Yes a worn dual mass flywheel will give simular symtoms with surging but its more likely to be a tick over but in this case its an auto and the torque converter is failing
