Coverage under extended warranty- how is decision made

As a belts and braces kind of guy, and obviously willing throw money away, my dealer sold me both a service plan and extended warranty, all renewed for three years on my 68k Disco 4 HSE (09 ). They have happily taken my money on the extended warranty ( about £1100 a year ). There have been three faults in that time. A door lock, an air suspension compressor which total around £1000. The third fault was yet to reveal itself.........

The dealer always rings and tells me the price expecting me to pay and I have to remind them of the warranty. I therefore conclude that as "normal wear and tear" is included, they both counted as parts failure. So between them they are £2k to the good.

Roll forward to the annual service a few weeks ago, they advised me the knock ( which I hadn't heard) was because the front hydra bush and arms will need replacement and wheel alignment, some £1200 in total. Because they'd found it and not me, I guess they'd been proactive because they told me it is not covered by the warranty, they'd rung them. I had just renewed the warranty yet again,on time, and covered throughout ownership.

So even if they funded that new issue, of which I was unaware, they are still nearly £1k up on the deal over the three years not a fair return or balance of risk between us all. A refusal often offends and it has. So how did they decide that this was wear and tear, presumably the exclusion reason, yet the compressor was not. Anyone know how this all works, because it now seems a random decision making scam with the dealer complicit. Do they get more money if they do the work than get on warranty work. I am less than happy!!!

What do the warranty T&C's say about wear and tear?
Not sure your comment on risk makes sense - a warranty is an insurance policy, simple.

Got to agree with Adam. Some people will gain, other loose, but overall the company are in it to make a profit. As for what's wear and tear, your always on a hiding to nothing when a garage decides what's covered and what's not. You can argue your corner, but mostly it's like spitting in the wind.

From page 5 of my used vehicle warranty handbook:

What Land Rover Retailer Warranty Does Not Cover

- Gradual reduction in operating performance (wear and tear) consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. Components that may be subject top wear include:
- brake discs, drums and frictional materials;
- suspension and steering components;
- clutch pressure plates, bearings and frictional material

Seems quite clear to me.

I can only comment from a painful previous experience with LR extended warranty and front suspension bushes on a D3 in 2009.

Had the front arms done on my D4 in Feb this year - less than £600 with genuine LR parts

My preference is now a decent Indy (got one) and this site Thumbs Up

Thanks Adam useful. I don't know where you are from your posting. In the belief you might be somewhere in the South, who was your Indy ?

Andy is, I believe, way up North - see his location on the map.

I suggest a good indy for you would be Geoff. - from this forum, comes highly recommended by one & all.

Sorry - I'm near Manchester but hope you get sorted soon Thumbs Up

Not sure of average dealer hourly rates in South East but Indy I uses charges £45 per hour, main dealer I always used to use was £105 ISTR.

Always nice to talk directly to the knowledgeable guy who is actually working on your car

OK, no pretty receptionist, free wifi and drinks or a valet - but who cares?
