Replacing D3 for D4 or Newer..? Which one

Hi All

Had 10 years fun with my 2005 D3 HSE - looking to buy another one - dilemma can't really wait 18 months for the new model or afford it when it does arrive - so do I buy a 2014 model onwards and pay premium for nearly new car and cheaper road tax or go for slightly older model and save a fair bit which I can put toward higher road tax. Discoveries have changed a fair bit in cost and spec since I bought mine and it would seem you have to pay quite a bit for similar spec these days - or perhaps a lower spec newer model would be all I need....? Are there other advantages to buying the latest model - have LR finally ironed all the niggles out of these cars or are there still some gremlins even in the latest ones..?

Any thoughts advice would be greatly received

J

I have had 3 D4's now ranging from a 59 plate up to my latest one which is a 15MY, I would say there are significant difference between them all and would especially if you intend to keep it go for the latest you can afford or get.

Yes I was thinking the same only issue is what happens to the value once the new Discovery comes out but then can't have it all.

Not sure the value will drop that much and it may even increase slightly as some may be after the D4 more than the D5

Personally I am a big fan of owning older cars with relatively low mileage as a way of enjoying upmarket motoring on a reasonable budget and you have the benefit of the huge amount of knowledge accumulated on here, however I can understand the the attraction of a nice shiny newish model with a comprehensive warranty, if this is your preference I would recommend buying as new a D4 as you can find without the adblue diesel additive system. Something like the MY15 D4 that Russell is running would be perfect, as far as depreciation is concerned, if your intention is to enjoy your next Discovery for 10 years, then it will not be an issue.

Why avoid the AdBlue system?

1, you cant have rear a/c.
2, its bound to be a problem in the future, the trucks are still having issues 10 years after it was introduced.

The replacement of the D4 with the D5 has so many parallels with the move from the FL2 to the Disco Sport. After the launch of the D5 the values of very late FL2's actually rose slightly and stayed firm. I wouldn't worry about residuals.

AdBlue is a relative unknown in cars (although it's been in use on commercial vehicles for several years prior) and a lot of non users are concerned about its potential reliability. I can only go by my own experience of an AdBlue equipped 9/2015 D4 which, after 20,000 miles, hasn't put a foot wrong.

I'd simply go for the spec that I wanted first and then buy the newest and nicest example that I could find if I were you. Happy hunting Thumbs Up

Thanks guys

I don't do a lot of miles so the MPG won't make a lot of difference to me and I can buy quite a lot of tax with the price difference in later cars

So apart from bonnet logo change, lower tax, better MPG are there any other advantages over the slightly older D4 that make it worth the extra £££

I love my 2016 model even more than my 2012, it is another step up. Beware, it also appears there are spec differences in the Graphite, when it first came out the SE Tech was still about, and features seemed to be split whereas the Graphite now has everything from both

Had my D3 se 2006 for nearly 8 years only done 57000 miles, looked at Replacing it with 2-3 year old but all had as much miles if not more, after looking for low mileage one and the prices they were fetching decided on new route. Some really good deals on pre Reg. Had really good deal on Landmark from Stradsones Very Happy. Must say am really impressed such a difference from my d3

It's hard to give spot on advice because buying a vehicle involves so much personal decision making. In general, getting a D4 to replace your D3 is good. Any model you get will be better in terms of performance and should be more reliable. The idea of the D4 was, in essence, to put right everything that was problematical on the D3 and to a great extent, it was successful.

As for the particular model and year, then from the limited knowledge available about your thought processes, then I'd make a list of things that the car has to have. Transfer that into a trim level (taking into consideration that a lower trim level might have what you need as factory fitted extras (reversing camera for example), then go for the best model you can afford.

As for mileage over age, it seems to be the case that high mileage D4's, properly serviced, seem to be proving reliable. But that said, I would argue that a lower mileage, well looked after, well preserved vehicle of, perhaps a year or so older than a younger one for the same price is worthy of consideration. Especially if you intend to keep it for a good few years, as the condition then will be a bigger factor in it's eventual selling price.

Thanks for the great advice guys - I think I'm edging now to a cheaper tax band late model D4, perhaps an SE Tech to keep the price down as from what I can see it's only glass roof that I will really miss from my old HSE - unless I find another bargain HSE of course..!

Ukraine 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

I purchased a new HSE last June. I plan to hold onto it for at least 5 years and working through the numbers compared to 1-2 year old cars it made sense because it had a 3 year warranty, road tax saving of £200 per year, slightly better economy ( start /stop etc), EU6 compliance which may be a concern later on, 5 years servicing at £699 which was a huge saving. In terms of what's included it was the sun roof and seat memory which were the imortant - hence the HSE. My wife and I both drive the car and it takes ages to get the seat comfortable. The seat memory wasn't available as an option on a lower spec.
Good luck with your search. There was one for sale on this forum that only had 2000 miles on it at a bargain price.
Cheers

That's a point, that was one of the reasons for insisting on a Euro 6 compliant Disco 4; as government and local authorities look to increase their tax take from motorists, they are highly to use "green" excuses to justify their actions. Expect older emission category diesels to be an easy target!

Here's an example of it happening now:
