Changing Tone Drone With Speed |
|
Hi,
I have read many a thread on how to diagnose Diff - transfer box noises, whereby I do not know anymore than I did before I started reading all of them
Now on our car, between 30 to 65 the drone increases as the speed does, then decreases as the speed does (there is no vibration etc through the car).
If I put the car into neutral and coast from 65 to 30, the noise is the same - so it is there under load or not.
So what I have done is drop the oil in both diffs, transfer box and no major metal - only some very fine particle matter on the magnetic plugs.
The tranny oil was still quite clear, the rear diff similar, and the front diff slightly darker. I then changed all the oils as one does, then I decided to drop the front diff oil again on Sunday - whereby it was very dark considering it has only been in a couple of weeks, but still no lumps of metal?
I have also replaced both front hub bearings with 2 Timken units from AF, so they should not be causing the noise.
Question is - what woukd be your first call here?
I have as a precaution ordered the replacement bearing kit for the front diff from AF - as I am leaning more towards front diff due to the colour of oil, but I am not 100%, any help would be appreciated.
PS - apologies for asking what seems like a common question, but I coukd not find a good enough answer
Kind regards
Jay

Hi,
4 new tyres, 4 wheels balanced, tyre pressures checked, 4 wheel alignment so that is not it.The sound is definitely mechanical, and it is not affected by gear changes - sound / drone maintains the same pitch as vehicle changes gear.
Noise is the same if I coast in neutral.
Kind regards
Jay
After I replace front diff bearings, I may invest in some Chassis Ears if noise still there

Hi,
There is no play, and no rough feeling on rotating the wheels - so did your rear wheel bearings show any visible wear on manual checks to the wheels?
Kind regards

I can't remember I am afraid. I remember thinking it was a front wheel bearing but it turned out to be the rear nearside one.
If it makes odd noises I give it to Disco_mikey so I am not sure how he diagnosed it.
Sorry I know that't not much help.

Hi omg,
No worries, I fully appreciate these things are difficult to diagnose with a car in front of you, let alone over the internet. Got the bearing kit today from AF, so I will change the front diff bearings and seals due to the coulour of oil after only a couple of weeks running - then if that does not work, will order some Chassis Ears and let the hunt continue
Kind regards
Jay

Rear prop center bearing?
Once I applied a field fix of Sikaflex to my center bearing rubber support it started droning as the bearing itself is fubared as well. Series 1 V8
Series 2 Hibrid V8
Discovery 3 HSE V8
