Steering Rack

Hi all, after some advice if possible. My 2008 D3 has just gone in for its annual service and the dealership have said they found a leak out of the steering rack. So much so they reckon it needs replacing. I have just returned from a driving holiday in France and had no steering issues, heaviness noises etc. Just some slight vibration on braking which I would say is more a balance or tracking issue. Could the rack really go from seemingly fine to knackered just like that? The dealers are pretty good normally and I have a friend who works there too. It just all seems a bit odd, almost like they are reporting on the wrong vehicle! Any one any thoughts? Cheers Rich

I have I small leak on the steering rack it's been like that for over 2 years and 20.000 miles later, I will fit another one sometime, without seeing it it would be hard to say but ever chance it will be fine keep an eye on the fluid.

Thanks MarkOne,

I spoke to them this morning and apparently some racks have changeable seals other not. Which also seems random as I would imagine something like a steering rack would be standard across all variants of D3s.

Cheers

Richard

Biggest culprits seem to be seals.

See AF page. Cheap.

It could fail the MOT if it's leaking bad enough, but if your not sure top up the res and monitor how quick the level drops.. There are diffent racks listed as L/R update /modify change supplier etc

Thanks DiscoGaz for the AF link. I have seen AF talked about regularly on the site, and who knew they are only 3 miles away from us in Southampton, bonus.

Thanks very much
