8 speed gearbox problems
I have been having problems with the 8 speed box in my MY12 discovery 4. When the outside temp is below 14 degrees the gearbox fails to lock up in the first 4 gears (won't go into 5th), feels like the clutch is slipping as in a manual car. When you pull away all feels normal until you take your foot off the throttle when the engine revs fall to idle and the engine provides no braking effect at all. On the move as long as you don't have to use much throttle it drives as normal only with slightly higher revs than normal, if you have to use reasonable throttle to get out of a junction then the revs rise fast and it feels like clutch slip. After a while the gearbox will work normally with no clutch slip but this depends on how cold it is .
I have changed the oil using Robbie's guide and reset gearbox adaptations, I also charged the battery incase it was low on charge. I am now at a loss as what the problem could be I have a fault code reader for jag/landrover but this shows now fault codes for the gearbox (tried 2 different types and an independent also found no fault codes)

Isnt that the way they all work? My 6sp would be similar until the fluid is warmed up.

Mine is like this, and has been from new. It's normal for the lock up not to occur until a certain oil temperature is reached. On my car, it can take a couple of miles up the road on a really cold day.
Unless you have a faulty gearbox temp sensor? If you have an IID tool, you can monitor the gearbox temps in live values.

The oil temp sensor is fine I looked the other day when doing the oil change. I think I will talk to bristol transmissions get there view on the situation.

Me too. I live on a hill and going up first thing on a cold morning it does what you describe. My D3 did this also with its 6 speed box. All normal to get the gearbox temps up quickly as I understand it.Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE '65 - Projects in planning phase!

How can you tell a sensor is working correctly by looking at it? - although it does appear to be working as it should from your discription!It can when others can't,

I have live data through the diagnostic tool.
It is strange as I never noticed this until I tried to pull a tree out of a ditch and ended up spinning all 4 wheels on gravel. I thought I had damaged the box.
